I’m enjoying making a few changes to these paintings. Of course the idea is to correct and improve things noticed over time with the paintings.
Artists are often asked, “How long did it take you to paint that?” I can’t help feeling a little annoyed by this one. I will paint when I want to for as long or short as I am moved to and I am not on an assembly line with a boss standing over me. Much the opposite, I enjoy forgetting about time while engaging with the painting.
Local painter Philip Geiger spoke about taking months and years with certain paintings and I could imagine him living with these works and seeing different possibilities over time.
The old masters such as Caravaggio and daVinci are known for painting over sections of their paintings for various reasons. There is often the bedeviling question, “Is it done yet?”
