I’m enjoying making a few changes to these paintings. Of course the idea is to correct and improve things noticed over time with the paintings.
Artists are often asked, “How long did it take you to paint that?” I can’t help feeling a little annoyed by this one. I will paint when I want to for as long or short as I am moved to and I am not on an assembly line with a boss standing over me. Much the opposite, I enjoy forgetting about time while engaging with the painting.
Local painter Philip Geiger spoke about taking months and years with certain paintings and I could imagine him living with these works and seeing different possibilities over time.
The old masters such as Caravaggio and daVinci are known for painting over sections of their paintings for various reasons. There is often the bedeviling question, “Is it done yet?”

This past Summer I became interested in Frederic Church it being the bicentennial of the birth of one of America’s foremost painters. His “The Natural Bridge, Virginia” is an example of his painting travels to many natural wonders. This State Park is about 50 miles from where I live and I have visited there many times. So, I decided to paint from one of the photos I have taken there and try my hand at another straight landscape, 18 x 24 inches oil on canvas. There are a lot of lights and darks in this area and I enjoy viewing my painting in various light levels noticing what stands out and what disappears.

“The Card Players Enter The Twilight Zone” is another fun painting where I referenced Cezanne’s “The Card Players”. I was familiar with the series and saw one at the Barnes Museum in Philadelphia. My appreciation and understanding of Cezanne’s paintings was not so much, so I decided to study him by imitation. Also, the thing about figures around a table appealed to me.

Adding Rod Serling and Twilight Zone themes was the best part especially as the classic TV show fades into history along with old paintings.

I’m happy that this painting is also in the home of a good old friend in North Carolina where he can unlock this door with the key of imagination.

Musicians borrow riffs and play cover songs. Artists borrow layouts and compositions from previous art works.

Quite a while ago I stumbled upon “The Young Inventor” painted in Red China sometime in the 60’s. I have painted three versions of it, all titled, “The Surrealists Convention”. Here is the most recent one, completed about 8 years ago in Virginia.

I began the painting in Northern California so there’s the reference to their golden hills outside the windows. Other references are from my early influences, Dali and Magritte. The totality is my own invention. The painting is in good hands with friends in Asheville, NC.

Very pleased to be included in this outstanding exhibition!

Mid-Atlantic New Painting Biennial 2026
First presented in 1997, the Mid-Atlantic New Painting Biennial has become one of the University of Mary Washington’s longest-running and most anticipated exhibitions. Now in its thirteenth iteration, the biannual exhibition continues its mission of showcasing outstanding contemporary painting from across the Mid-Atlantic region and providing a platform for both emerging and established artists.
Selected from more than 500 submissions, the forty-three artists included here represent a wide range of perspectives, approaches, and creative processes. Together, their work offers a compelling view of the current state of painting, and of the varied methods of responding to our present moment found across the region.

“The Oldies Guitar Player” my second recent painting done in response to a concept presented by @riverviews_artspace called “Modern Twist”.

I stood upon the shoulders of the giant Picasso who painted the original in 1904. Following the lines of this somewhat contorted figure was part of the brushwork fun.

“Arrangement with Black and White TV”, this is one of two recent paintings done in response to a concept presented by @riverviews_artspace called “Modern Twist”. The idea is to modernize a work of art created before 1935. I’ve always enjoyed imitating the great artists, so this project came naturally to me. I came to appreciate Whistler’s original composition, but I like mine even more! 😆

Earlier this week “Snake Farm” was sold at @dovetail_design_va in Charlottesville to a couple who are taking it up to their NY apartment! Appropriate since the beach stones are from the north shore of Long Island.

This is one of less than ten large beach stones paintings I’ve done and they take months of time. I may not do any more and will hold onto the largest ones that took a year to paint. Those were done a little at a time at night after my day job. by @hankgrebe
