Today we cheered the community on at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s held by @alzassociation !

Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

Before modern anesthesia, amputations were performed with the patient fully conscious, so speed was considered a major surgical skill. The limb would be restrained, sometimes with assistants physically holding the patient down, and surgeons often used alcohol, opium, or other sedatives to dull pain, but these were nowhere near as effective or predictable as anesthesia. A skilled surgeon could remove a limb in just a few minutes because every extra second meant more agony and blood loss. The procedure itself involved cutting through skin and muscle, sawing through the bone, tying off major blood vessels, and closing the wound as best they could. The pain was only part of the danger: infection, shock, and hemorrhage killed many patients, especially before antiseptic techniques became common.
