🗓️ From October 3 to 5, 1991, the Concrete Foundations Forum took place at the Airport Marriott in Los Angeles, California 🇺🇸 It was the first forum dedicated exclusively to heavy metal and was held annually from 1988 to 1997
📝 Fan: “I was one of the 4000 there that weekend! What a blast!! Adult Disneyland is the best comparison. Like being in Amsterdam for the weekend except with great music and hot girls!! Got Ronny Dio’s autograph, interviewed Rob Halford for the SF Weekly, saw Alice in Chains and Pantera for the first time live. Just incredible that only 4000 was there to see it all.”
The first Foundations Awards ceremony was held in 1991:
🏆🏆🏆 — Megadeth were named Best Thrash Band and also received awards for Rust in Peace and “Hangar 18.” The band performed “Go to Hell” at the ceremony.
🏆🏆🏆 — Jane’s Addiction were named Best Hard Alternative Band, won Best Album Art, and shared the award for Best Video with Slayer.
🏆🏆 — Queensrÿche received two awards — Best Hard Rock Band & Top Artist (Retail).
🏆 — Slayer’s music video for “Seasons in the Abyss” was named Best Video.
🏆 — Pantera were named Top New Artist.
🏆 — Alice in Chains received the Best Debut Album award for their album Facelift.
Faith No More (Top Home Video), Napalm Death (Top Independent Artist), and Ozzy Osbourne (Lifetime Achievement Award) also received one award each.
On the first day, October 3, Blind Melon, Temple of the Dog, and Alice in Chains performed alongside Megadeth. Over the following days, Ozzy Osbourne, Soundgarden, Prong, Ugly Kid Joe, XYZ, Crimson Glory, The Almighty, Bang Tango, Claytown Troupe, Screaming Jets, Baby Animals, Lillian Axe, and Asphalt Ballet also performed at the event.
The awards ceremony was hosted by Ronnie James Dio, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, Lemmy Kilmister, Rick Rubin, Penelope Spheeris, and Rikki Rockett.
The event was sponsored by Barq’s Root Beer, which also participated in the forum for the first time.
Over half a million dollars was raised for the TJ Martell Foundation through ticket sales for the awards ceremony and casino night held during the convention.
