🗓️ From October 3 to 5, 1991, the Concrete Foundations Forum took place at the Airport Marriott in Los Angeles, California 🇺🇸 It was the first forum dedicated exclusively to heavy metal and was held annually from 1988 to 1997

📝 Fan: “I was one of the 4000 there that weekend! What a blast!! Adult Disneyland is the best comparison. Like being in Amsterdam for the weekend except with great music and hot girls!! Got Ronny Dio’s autograph, interviewed Rob Halford for the SF Weekly, saw Alice in Chains and Pantera for the first time live. Just incredible that only 4000 was there to see it all.”

The first Foundations Awards ceremony was held in 1991:

🏆🏆🏆 — Megadeth were named Best Thrash Band and also received awards for Rust in Peace and “Hangar 18.” The band performed “Go to Hell” at the ceremony.

🏆🏆🏆 — Jane’s Addiction were named Best Hard Alternative Band, won Best Album Art, and shared the award for Best Video with Slayer.

🏆🏆 — Queensrÿche received two awards — Best Hard Rock Band & Top Artist (Retail).

🏆 — Slayer’s music video for “Seasons in the Abyss” was named Best Video.

🏆 — Pantera were named Top New Artist.

🏆 — Alice in Chains received the Best Debut Album award for their album Facelift.

Faith No More (Top Home Video), Napalm Death (Top Independent Artist), and Ozzy Osbourne (Lifetime Achievement Award) also received one award each.

On the first day, October 3, Blind Melon, Temple of the Dog, and Alice in Chains performed alongside Megadeth. Over the following days, Ozzy Osbourne, Soundgarden, Prong, Ugly Kid Joe, XYZ, Crimson Glory, The Almighty, Bang Tango, Claytown Troupe, Screaming Jets, Baby Animals, Lillian Axe, and Asphalt Ballet also performed at the event.

The awards ceremony was hosted by Ronnie James Dio, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, Lemmy Kilmister, Rick Rubin, Penelope Spheeris, and Rikki Rockett.

The event was sponsored by Barq’s Root Beer, which also participated in the forum for the first time.

Over half a million dollars was raised for the TJ Martell Foundation through ticket sales for the awards ceremony and casino night held during the convention.

🗓️ On Easter Monday, April 20, 1992, Metallica performed at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness at Wembley Stadium in London, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 in front of over 70,000 spectators.

🎫 72,000 tickets sold out within just a few hours, and those who couldn’t get in watched the four-hour show live across 76 countries - with an estimated global audience of one billion.

Metallica took a break from their North American tour to fly to England and pay tribute to Freddie Mercury - while also sharing the stage with the very legends they grew up idolizing. Just look at James’ almost childlike excitement at the sight of Tony Iommi, Brian May, John Deacon, and Roger Taylor.

Rumor has it that during rehearsals, James even pretended to struggle with his voice just to run the song again… simply for another chance to play alongside them :)

When Metallica opened the show, much of the audience - unaware of the still-secret guest lineup - was caught completely off guard.

📝 Fan: “I was there. Metallica opened the show, and it was so unexpected. If Wembley had a roof, they would’ve blown it off. A phenomenal day.”

Hetfield stood out that night — the only one to use foul language, and the only one to jokingly form a makeshift penis with his hand during “Stone Cold Crazy.” But it wasn’t just attitude - it was nerves and excitement. Without his guitar, he looked slightly out of place, even mixing up some lyrics along the way.

The officially released version of “Stone Cold Crazy” also differs from the live broadcast… In the middle of the song, the new “Supergroup” momentarily lost its rhythm, and the sound engineers had to edit this fragment.

This concert also featured David Bowie, Spinal Tap, Def Leppard, Guns N’ Roses (fans tried to boycott them for their homophobic remarks), Extreme, U2, Elizabeth Taylor, Robert Plant, Elton John, George Michael, and many others…

Just two months earlier, Metallica had won a Grammy for their cover of “Stone Cold Crazy”, and that day at Wembley, they played it alongside their heroes 🤘

🗓️ From May 24 to June 29, 1997, Pantera played 22 shows at Ozzfest – their first and the first national Ozzfest. The shows took place in 18 states, but the festival wouldn’t expand beyond America until the following year (1998)

Type O Negative, Fear Factory, Marilyn Manson, Machine Head, and Pantera all shared the same stage. But the highlight of that year was the reunion of Black Sabbath 🦇

Almost everyone present unanimously states that this was the band’s peak performance, and it was during their sets that the metalheads would go wild and start sod fights. In some states, this went so far that fans were arrested if caught with sod in their hands.

The festival’s final show (Columbus, July 1st) was canceled due to Osbourne losing his voice, and instead of Ozzy and Sabbath, an ad-hoc band consisting of members of Pantera (the main band), Type O Negative, Fear Factory, and Marilyn Manson took the stage.

📝 Fan: “Pantera served as the house band and played Ozzy and Sabbath covers for like an hour (less) with a guest vocalist for almost every song. They threw together an EPIC jam session at the drop of a hat. Blew my fucking mind.”

For 35 minutes, the guys played a short set of Ozzy covers, including “I Don’t Know,” “Mr. Crowley,” “Suicide Solution,” “Crazy Train,” and “Bark At The Moon.”

But some fans were very upset and caused widespread destruction, demanding refunds for their tickets.

📝 MTV News: “The capacity crowd of 20,000 was less than thrilled with the news, and about 1,000 of them took their anger out on the venue. Fans smashed box office windows, ripped down panels from a wooden fence, and lit small fires around the amphitheater grounds. According to the Columbus Dispatch, the crowd also seriously damaged at least one car and destroyed trees and tences on neighboring property. This riot resulted in the arrest of 23 attendees.”

🗓️ 46 years ago today, on October 27, 1980, Motörhead released the single “Ace of Spades”, ahead of the release of the album of the same name on November 8.

Legend has it that Mr. Kilmister wrote the lyrics in the back of a tour van as it sped along English roads at around 90 mph (145 km/h) in a 70 mph (110 km/h) zone.

Lemmy himself admitted that the song wasn’t exactly a lyrical masterpiece. He used gambling metaphors and clichés throughout the lyrics, describing the whole thing as an exercise in gambling terminology.

Despite having an ace of spades tattoo on his left forearm, which he got in the Netherlands in 1979 (possibly in October), Lemmy admitted that he actually preferred slot machines to playing cards.

📝 Lemmy: “I’m more into the slot machines actually, but you can’t really sing about spinning fruit, and the wheels coming down.”

The “Ace of Spades” is associated with the famous “dead man’s hand” in poker, a combination of two black aces and two black eights. According to legend, these were the cards held by Wild Bill Hickok when he was shot dead in 1876.

📝 Lemmy: “Of course, ‘Ace of Spades’ is the best one, but I never thought it was going to be that good. I’m glad we got famous for that rather than for some turkey… but I sang ‘the eight of spades’ for two years, and nobody noticed.”

Happy 46th anniversary to this legendary song, which has become the band’s signature anthem! 🤘

NIKE, BRING BACK THE HIGH-TOPS! 👟

Oversized tongues, chunky silhouettes, straps, wild colorways, and designs that pushed boundaries. The late ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s gave us some of the most iconic sneakers ever made. It’s time to bring that attitude back!

🗓️ On August 12, 1996, Pantera performed at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA 🇺🇸 as part of the War of the Gargantuans tour, co-headlined with White Zombie

The tour supported Pantera’s The Great Southern Trendkill, released in May, and lasted throughout the summer. It would prove to be one of the most turbulent periods in the band’s history.

In 1996, Pantera were going through the most serious internal crisis of their career. Phil Anselmo was becoming increasingly distant from the others as his drug problems spiraled out of control. The Abbott brothers and Rex Brown struggled to understand what was happening and how they could help him.

Phil’s back problems were causing him increasingly severe pain with every movement, and he was taking progressively stronger medication. He was afraid to undergo surgery because it could put the band’s career on hold for an indefinite period.

On July 13, after a show at the Starplex Amphitheatre in Dallas, Phil’s heart stopped for nearly five minutes in the backstage area. Fortunately, paramedics managed to revive him (More in the comments)

Following the incident, Phil made his now-famous declaration:

“I WILL NOT DIE SO EASILY! I’m here to piss off the music press for a long time to come.”

He then continued the tour as if nothing had happened, taking the stage on the very same day he was released from the hospital… When he regained consciousness, he reportedly lashed out at the medical staff. Years later, he described that night as the most humiliating of his life.

🗓️ On October 19, 1993, Sepultura released their fifth studio album, Chaos A.D., via Epic Records in North America 🇺🇸 The album had been released in Europe in September via Roadrunner Records

The album was originally going to be titled Propaganda, but shortly before its release, Max changed the title to Chaos A.D., inspired by the Misfits’ album Earth A.D. 💀

This was their second, partly experimental album with producer Andy Wallace, who had also worked on their previous album Arise and their follow-up, Roots.

📝 Max Cavalera: «To me, it’s still a very strange album. There are a lot of things that you could almost call instrumental tracks, like ‘We Who Are Not as Others’ or ‘Kaiowas.’ Also, in the middle of the album, we suddenly have a cover of a NEW MODEL ARMY song. And that was great. We really loved NEW MODEL ARMY and just decided, ‘F*ck it, let’s put this song on the album.’»

But Igor was the biggest NMA fan, and he was the one who convinced the other band members to include ‘The Hunt’ on the album. :)

Let’s celebrate the 33rd anniversary of this great album and pick the best track! 🖤🤘

🗓️ On October 14, 1990, Megadeth performed at Wembley Arena in London, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 as part of the first leg of the Clash of the Titans tour

Megadeth had arrived in the UK with Slayer, Testament, and Suicidal Tendencies two days earlier and had already played two shows, in Edinburgh and Birmingham.

At the end of their set, Diamond Head vocalist Sean Harris joined Megadeth onstage for a performance of his band’s “It’s Electric” (slide 10).

It must have been a special moment for Dave, as he had originally wanted Harris to be Megadeth’s singer and had long been a fan of the band.

On the second slide, you can see Dave Mustaine hanging out with Sean Harris after the show and leaving a message for Lars Ulrich: “Eat your heart out, Lars” :) At the time, Slayer’s “South of Heaven” was playing in the background.

📝 Fan: «I was here at Wembley, it was a great show. All the bands performed brilliantly. Megadeth were the best in my opinion. During Slayer’s set, my girlfriend complained of a headache, and we left. It was too loud for a newcomer»

Huge thanks to George Chin for the photos 📸

🗓️ On October 12, 1991, the final Day on the Green festival promoted by Bill Graham (slide 8) took place at the Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum in Oakland, California, USA 🇺🇸 He died in a helicopter crash less than two weeks later, on October 25

Soundgarden opened the festival, followed by Faith No More and Queensrÿche, with Metallica headlining the event.

The show became infamous as the “Flying Sod Show” due to the massive riots, fights, and destruction of the stadium’s turf, resulting in significant property damage.

Approximately $20,000 was spent on emergency turf repairs alone, as the Oakland A’s were scheduled to play there just a couple of days later. The total damage was estimated at $100,000…

📝 Fan: “There were about 20 major fights. It was a real brawl, and in the end, only one person was left. This guy must have been about 6’5”, with long hair, built like Tarzan. He stood alone, triumphant, with his arms raised like Conan.”

During one of the opening acts’ sets, James Hetfield took a microphone backstage and asked everyone to calm down. But it didn’t help.

Bill Graham himself then approached the crowd in an attempt to put an end to the “metal antics”…

📝 Fan: “Bill Graham himself ran up to yell at us, but when I recognized him and called his name, his eyes widened and he ran away.”

According to eyewitness accounts, James was extremely nervous when he picked up an acoustic guitar to perform “The Unforgiven” live for the first time. Understandably so, as this was his first time playing acoustic guitar in front of a North American audience.

Soundgarden weren’t particularly popular at the time, but they won over many fans that day. Chris Cornell even took a photo of the audience (slide 9), saying, “I know they don’t let you have cameras here, but they let me” :)

Slayer members were also present at the show, but did not perform (slide 11)

By the way, MTV filmed the show using 19 cameras… Yet, despite this extensive coverage, only fragments of the performance have surfaced publicly so far. You can watch some of them on the Markit Aneight channel!

🗓️ From October 4 to 7, 1989, Metallica visited Brazil 🇧🇷 to play the final three shows of the Damaged Justice tour. This was their first visit to Brazil

Immediately after arriving, on the evening of October 4, the band played a concert at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracanã Arena, followed by two concerts (October 6 and 7) at São Paulo’s Ibirapuera Gymnasium.

A fourth show was scheduled for October 8, but it was canceled.

On the last day of the tour, James shaved Ross Halfin’s sideburns in the dressing room :)

📝 Ross Halfin: “The picture of Hetfield and I (slide 2) was my last picture with long hair ever. After we took that, he grabbed his shaver and I thought he was joking, but he took a chunk out of my hair. It looked so ridiculous I had to stand there and let him do the rest. I remember coming back to England, and my then-wife took one look at me and said, ‘How old are you, five? Just because you’re with them doesn’t mean you have to act like them.’ It’s funny looking at all these old pictures; they would never carry on like this now.”

Unfortunately, Lady Justice, Lars’ drum kit, and much other large-scale concert equipment couldn’t be transported to Brazil, so the Metallica team had to rent the necessary equipment.

📝 Ross: “The budget was tight, so Lars had to use hired drum kits. When we got to Sao Paulo, it was a black kit with flames, which made everyone laugh.”

This unusual drum kit was built in Brazil by a luthier named Tiberio and had previously been used by the Brazilian band Harppia :) You can see it clearly in slide 5.

Among the fans in attendance was Kiko Loureiro, who would later become Megadeth’s guitarist from 2015 to 2023. He was also a former member of Angra.

📝 Kiko: “I like Metallica, of course, and I saw Metallica live for the first time in ‘89 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and back then I was pretty young, I was 17. It was so hard to have any concerts in Brazil back then in ‘89, so it was cool to see the ‘...And Justice for All’ concert.”

Thanks to @rosshalfin , @marcoshermes , Alexandre Camargo, Isreal Neto and Marcio Siqueira for the photos in this post 🖤 by @metal.all
