I’ve learned so much from just a month of making and trading ATCs on
@atcdex - mostly how to loosen up and be okay with imperfect marks and “mistakes”. Originally, starting at 4 or 5 years old, I painted with acrylic and gouache as my main mediums. In 2019, when I started Stoner Zines, I got myself an iPad. It’s been a life saver and made art so much more accessible for me, and I’ve improved my drawing skills immensely in the past 7 years, but drawing and painting digitally started making me a perfectionist. I would redraw the same line 20 times to get the curve *just* right. I needed a break! I needed to remind myself that I know how to be creative on my own, I know how to paint, I know how to experiment and have fun, I know how to doodle (or at least I know I can learn!). Instagram tutorials have helped so much with both watercolor and acrylic marker, and now that I’m a bit more knowledgable of analog watercolor, I’m also having an easier time doing digital watercolor!
Making ATCs has helped with my constant feeling of impostor syndrome around being an “artist”, and I encourage anyone else, whether you sell your art or consider yourself an artist or not, to make and trade ATCs! Because even if you hate what you made, I’ve learned that someone else will probably love it, and then you get to toss art you don’t like and receive art you love in exchange! It’s a perfect system tbh
Thank you
@prairiefruitarts for giving me the push to dig out my strathmore cards and start creating <3
What do you like about making ATCs or just trading art in general?
