Percy Jackson began as a story Rick Riordan created for his son, who loved Greek mythology and wanted to hear bedtime stories about it. When Riordan ran out of traditional myths to tell, he began creating his own adventures featuring a modern-day demigod named Percy Jackson. That idea eventually became Percy Jackson & the Olympians, beginning with The Lightning Thief, which was published in 2005. Riordan combined Greek mythology with the modern world, imagining what it would be like if the ancient gods, monsters, and heroes still existed today. What started as a bedtime story grew into a bestselling book series that introduced millions of readers to Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and the world of Camp Half-Blood. Rick Riordan’s ability to make ancient mythology feel modern, funny, and relatable is a huge part of what made Percy Jackson so beloved and allowed the story to grow into a much bigger universe.
