The six words Megan would never forget.

“Societal expectations, along with the inevitable response to my subtle shout for help – “you’re a midwife, you’ll be fine!”, sadly led me to believe I had to be okay”.

Megan had cared for the sickest newborns in NICU. She’d held the hands of parents saying goodbye. She’d educated hundreds of new mums on the baby blues. Never did she imagine she would be the one needing extra support.

I was also a midwife when my first baby was born. I struggled so much. Family overseas, small town, no support. I knew how to fudge my EPND score, I knew what was a “high risk” answer, so I lied as I was scared my baby would taken from me, even though rational me knew that’s not what the tool was for.

Can totally relate - wasn’t a midwife - I was a nurse .. but I felt genuinely alone. I didn’t want to join a mothers group, dodged the UHHV from the CFHN because I was scared that they would judge me and think that I should know what to do … I finished my grad dip in middy thus year in June - and I too am a huge advocate for mental health especially in mums who are also health professionals - who know the system but shouldn’t be forgotten just because we are health professionals … sometimes we actually need a little bit more love and a little bit more attention - and someone to genuinely look after us, especially when we look after everyone else all the time! ❤️❤️

I was a nurse in SCN, and halfway through my post grad midwifery when I had my first baby in 2019. I thought I’d be fine. I also scored 13 on EPDS, but I was dismissed. I asked for help so many times and I was dismissed, until my baby was 10 months old and I started anti-depressants, but thanks for Covid, I couldn’t get in to see a psychologist. Fast forward to 2021, and I had another baby. Again, I asked for help, again I was dismissed until I demanded help, and I was admitted to a parent infant unit for a month. I’m now a fierce advocate for mental health, especially in mums.

🙌 as a health professional with a nursing background I can so relate to this! We also had this feedback in our recent survey from a midwife! It definitely highlights something important 🙌
