The mid-nineties screen debut of the Z3 in "GoldenEye" signaled a seismic shift in James Bond's cinematic identity, trading (mostly) traditional British grandeur for precision German dynamics.

Though its screen time was brief, the sleek roadster established a high-tech partnership that reached its zenith in "Tomorrow Never Dies". Navigating a parking garage via a touchpad Ericsson JB988 phone, the missile-equipped E38 750iL (actually a 740iL) executive saloon defined an era of gadgetry where Munich engineering met Q Branch ingenuity, cementing BMW as a formidable presence in secret service lore.

That fleeting romance culminated in the striking Z8 of "The World Is Not Enough", a car whose tragic, saw-severed fate on a dock marked the end of a legendary trilogy.

Beyond the product placement, this three-film chapter modernised the franchise's visual language, embedding sharp Bavarian aesthetics into the spy thriller genre.

It remains a masterclass in cinematic history, where cutting-edge performance seamlessly aligned with double-agent intrigue.

I love Brosnan era Bonds but I was never a huge fan of the BMWs.

Tomorrow never dies was the first bond movie I ever saw. (Great movie). But when I was I kid I didn’t realize bond was supposed to be a British icon. However i eventually realized he was and i consequently thought that bmw stood for British motor works. Lol

In my eyes the Z3 has always been a youngster's-car (or a hairdresser's), but never fitting for an agent of her Majesty with refined style.

They hardly had any screen time in any of the movies

These models had English noblesse so they were an obvious choice. But today… the design is straight out of a futuristic manga… in a bad way

Great cars, but Fleming was (understanably) not the most pro-German... he would not have been happy with this collaboration. For what its worth, I think a Cold War Bond written today would be driving German instead of British.
