Born from the audacious desire to reshape the silhouette of utility, the original BMW X4 (F26) swept onto the tarmac in 2014 as a statement of unyielding poise.

Borrowing the sturdy foundations of the F25 X3, it sheared away traditional proportions in favour of a tapering, coupé-like roofline, choosing dramatic posture over pragmatic load space. By the time the second-generation G02 arrived, that initial stroke of styling flair had matured into pure athleticism. With its widened stance, sharper shoulder lines, and the thunderous symphony of the M40i and X4 M, the G02 transformed a niche curiosity into a commanding, tarmac-carving grand tourer that wore its aesthetic arrogance with complete authority.

Now, the classic silhouette prepares to step out of the shadow of internal combustion and into a quiet, luminous future with the upcoming NA7. Gone is the reliance on multi-fuel platforms, replaced by the dedicated, electric purity of the Neue Klasse architecture.

Set to emerge as the all-electric iX4, this next chapter exchanges the mechanical growl of burning petrol for the silent, instantaneous rush of sixth-generation eDrive technology. Inside, raw controls give way to seamless light and the panoramic vision of a new digital horizon. Through this metamorphosis, the X4 sheds its combustion roots, evolving from a sculpted rebel of petrol power into an ethereal, sculpted beacon for a new era of motion.

Launched in 2003, the first-generation BMW X3 (E83) established the compact luxury crossover formula, marrying classic Bavarian driving dynamics with raw utility.

Built on the underlying architecture of the E46 3 Series and engineered in partnership with Austria's Magna Steyr, the E83 stood out for its mechanical purism and tactile feedback. At its heart were smooth naturally aspirated inline-six petrol engines, including the venerable M54 in earlier 2.5i and 3.0i variants, later upgraded during the mid-cycle refresh to the high-revving N52 in the 3.0si.

Paired with an available six-speed manual transmission, dynamic hydraulic steering, and early iterations of the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the original X3 delivered an uncompromised connection to the road that catered directly to driving enthusiasts despite its firm ride quality and utilitarian interior aesthetics.

Its successor, the F25, broadened the model's appeal with increased cabin space and a far more compliant ride, though UK buyers were offered an exclusively diesel powertrain line-up for the entirety of its production run (thanks, UK Government and the diesel push...😒).

The petrol engine returned to the mainstream UK range with the arrival of the third-generation G01, highlighted by the debut of the M Performance tier in the form of the X3 M40i. Powered by the acclaimed B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, the M40i injected serious performance back into the chassis while preserving daily usability.

Fast forward to the present, and the fourth-generation G45 X3 represents a total transformation into a digitalised, high-tech performance crossover. Anchored by an updated iteration of the B58 in the top-tier X3 M50, the G45 pair 48-volt mild-hybrid electrification with advanced chassis electronics, evolving the model from an analogue SAV into a sophisticated, multi-purpose flagship for modern mobility. Its looks and interior build quality however, leave much to be desired.

When the F39 arrived, it felt less like a conventional crossover and more like a low-slung, athletic hatch wearing an urban disguise.

It wore its proportions with a squat, muscular confidence, inverted kidney grilles widening toward the tarmac, and a roofline that gently tapered without surrendering its hatchback roots. The crowning touch was a quiet nod to heritage: the roundel neatly inset into the C-pillar, echoing the legendary E9 coupé of a bygone era.

Dynamically, it prioritised taut body control and sharp turn-in, offering an energetic, poised slice of modern Munich design wrapped in a compact footprint.

Fast forward to the U10 generation, and the ethos transforms entirely into a true Sports Activity Coupé statement. Gone is the raised-hatchback silhouette, replaced by a sweeping, fastback roofline, sharp angular surface creasing, and an unapologetically assertive stance that mirrors its larger X4 and X6 siblings.

Up front, iconic glow illumination and geometric kidney grilles announce a shift toward sharp digital aesthetics and theatrical presence. Larger, bolder, and heavily sculpted, the modern X2 steps out of the shadows of convention to deliver a distinctive, angular interpretation of the classic coupé silhouette.

Before compact crossovers succumbed to front-wheel-drive uniformity, the original E84 X1 stood apart.

Built on proven underpinnings with hydraulic steering, manual gearboxes, and smooth N52 Inline-Six power, it delivered genuine mechanical feedback and rear-biased agility in a long-nosed, touring-esque silhouette built for driving purists.

Yet the pivot to the F48 and today's U11 generation marked an inevitable architectural rethink. Trading classic mechanical layouts for transverse efficiency, sharp modern proportions, and high-voltage electrification, the X1 evolved from a quirky enthusiast anomaly into Munich's tech-forward, high-volume gateway for the modern era.

The G9x M5’s hybrid V8 meets the sleek, software-first silhouettes of Neue Klasse architecture as BMW’s latest lineage abandons traditional constraints.

High-voltage M Power blended with hyper-digitised luxury, proves that Munich’s newest design language is not just an evolution, but a complete transformation of its core identity.

From the sharp, lean forms of the F70, F74, and G50 3er to the looming digital monoliths of the G7x LCI and NA5 iX3, this era has redrawn the canvas of performance for the blue and white roundel.

However, as next-generation platforms and electrified powertrains overtake raw mechanical grit, are we watching the demise of "The Ultimate Driving Machine", or will BMW's Neue Klasse rule the neue welt?

Six distinct souls, six expressions in steel, all bound by a singular lineage yet driven by entirely separate destinies.

There is a fierce beauty in how these machines diverge, with the muscular stance of the F90 M5 commanding the tarmac while others quietly redefine what it means to carry the iconic badge. Every contour speaks of power and purpose, capturing a precise moment where engineering meets pure emotion.

The kidney grilles that adorned the G8x M3/M4 found their fans in time, though many do still hold a certain disdain for them, too.

When it comes to driving performance, there's no denying this generation of BMW delivered the goods. The F90 M5 held no prisoners, making short work of its rivals and many sports cars alike, whilst the G8x continues to deliver devastating performance both on track and the road.

Yet amidst this elite assembly rests the G32 6er GT, a sweeping and unconventional giant that always seemed to march to its own rhythm. It stands apart as a strange anomaly, a massive Six that never truly belonged to the conventional rules of the road.

While its siblings found their designated paths, this grand tourer failed to carve out a unique space of its own - perhaps the most captivating stories belong to the ones that simply never found their place.

The mid-nineties screen debut of the Z3 in "GoldenEye" signaled a seismic shift in James Bond's cinematic identity, trading (mostly) traditional British grandeur for precision German dynamics.

Though its screen time was brief, the sleek roadster established a high-tech partnership that reached its zenith in "Tomorrow Never Dies". Navigating a parking garage via a touchpad Ericsson JB988 phone, the missile-equipped E38 750iL (actually a 740iL) executive saloon defined an era of gadgetry where Munich engineering met Q Branch ingenuity, cementing BMW as a formidable presence in secret service lore.

That fleeting romance culminated in the striking Z8 of "The World Is Not Enough", a car whose tragic, saw-severed fate on a dock marked the end of a legendary trilogy.

Beyond the product placement, this three-film chapter modernised the franchise's visual language, embedding sharp Bavarian aesthetics into the spy thriller genre.

It remains a masterclass in cinematic history, where cutting-edge performance seamlessly aligned with double-agent intrigue.

The modern history of BMW feels less like a calculated product strategy and more like a restless fever dream written in steel, carbon, and petrol.

It is an era defined by bold departures and glorious contradictions, where the heavy-metal elegance of the folding-hardtop E89 Z4 shared showroom floors with the front-wheel-drive heresy of the 2 Series Tourer. From the thunderous, physics-defying rage of twin-turbo V8 M division SUVs to the whisper-quiet, carbon-monocoque soul of the i3 and the sleek, futuristic silhouette of the i8, Munich seemed utterly possessed by the desire to attempt every architectural trick in the book.

Yet within this chaotic, brilliant pantheon lies a poetic irony that haunts every enthusiast. In their relentless pursuit to build everything from urban mobility pods to high-riding track monsters, they proved they had the courage, the intellect, and the audacity to manifest virtually any machine imaginable.

They built the brave, the bizarre, and the breathtaking, yet drew the line at the one thing the world craved most: a true, standalone M powered supercar.

The F-series generation marked a monumental sea change in BMW’s engineering philosophy, defining an era where raw, relentless performance was redefined through forced induction.

Moving away from the high-revving, naturally aspirated engines that demanded driver involvement at the top of the tachometer, cars like the F80 M3, F87 M2, and F10 M5 introduced vast waves of low-end torque and immediate speed. Coupled with lightning-fast transmissions and increasingly sophisticated electronic chassis controls, this era transformed performance BMWs from razor-sharp track tools into high-tech powerhouses capable of effortless, everyday pace.

Yet, for all the undeniable speed and capability gained during this period, the F-series also represents a poignant threshold for purists. It captured the exact moment BMW transitioned from purely mechanical feedback to digital precision, trading iconic, atmospheric induction sound for forced-induction punch and synthetic acoustic augmentation.

While the aggressive styling and menacing road presence of models like the F13 M6 and F2x M140i solidified their status as modern classics, the generation ultimately stands as a bridge between the classic, analogue sports cars of the past and the fully digitised, electrified future of high performance.

Love or hate the Chris Bangle era, there is no denying it forced BMW into a radical new direction that forever altered the brand’s identity.

The early 2000s saw the introduction of 'flame-surfacing', a sharp, sculpture-like design language defined by dramatic light reflections, sweeping body lines, and the highly controversial 'Bangle Butt' rear styling seen on models like the E65 7 Series and E63 6 Series. While these bold aesthetic choices split the enthusiast community down the middle, they proved that BMW was willing to tear up its own heritage to redefine modern automotive design.

Yet, beneath those polarising body panels lay some of the most celebrated engineering achievements in motorsport history. This era marked the final, glorious curtain call for naturally aspirated BMW power, best exemplified by the screaming, F1-inspired S85 V10 and the high-revving S65 V8 found in the M models.

Decades later, as the industry pivots toward forced induction and electrification, these flame-surfaced machines have transformed from design disruptions into sought-after classics, reminding us of a time when BMW took massive risks and let naturally aspirated engines sing all the way past 8,000 RPM.

The turn of the millennium marked an era when BMW simply could not miss.

From the razor-sharp handling of the E46 M3 to the effortless V8 muscle of the E39 M5, every model in the 00s lineup felt like a masterclass in driver engagement. Throw in cinematic icons like the sleek Z8, the commanding 750iL, and the game-changing E53 X5, and you had a roster that didn't just compete: it set the global benchmark for performance and luxury.

Decades later, this golden era remains the yardstick by which all modern sports cars and sport-saloons are measured. It wasn't just a strong product cycle; it was a peak moment in automotive history where analogue feedback, timeless design, and pure driving passion aligned perfectly.

Whether you consider it the greatest lineup of all time or a standard BMW has been chasing ever since, one thing is certain: we may never see a collection of legends like this again.

The 1990s saw BMW operate at the absolute peak of its powers, crafting vehicles defined by mechanical purity and undeniable prestige.

From the razor-sharp chassis dynamics of the E36 M3 and the striking silhouette of the manual V12 850 CSi to the understated elegance of the E32 7 Series, Munich consistently produced machines that blended effortless performance with timeless design.

The ultimate testament to this golden era, perhaps, was the naturally aspirated V12 engine built for the McLaren F1, a masterpiece of engineering that propelled a road car into hypercar mythology and established BMW as the undisputed master of high-performance powertrains.

Before driver aids and digital insulation took hold, these cars delivered an unadulterated connection to the road through hydraulic steering, manual gearboxes, and glorious natural aspiration. It was a rare moment in automotive history where technical ambition matched aesthetic restraint, resulting in a roster of legends that modern performance cars are still measured against today.

This unique alignment of analogue feedback and engineering brilliance created a benchmark for driver engagement that remains unmatched.
