HOW TO GROW LISIANTHUS FROM SEED (aka the only way to grow certified organic lisianthus)

1. Seed selection: most commercially available lisianthus seed will be pelleted (not certified organic). I’ve found that dissolving the pellet with a spray bottle or dissolving it in water makes a huge different with germination

2. SOIL BLOCKING have by far given me the best results with starting these as they encourage root growth and help provide better airflow to the plants, which can help reduce damping off (baby seedlings dying)

3. VERMICULITE on the surface of your soil blocks with help prevent algae growth surrounding your seedlings. I add another layer of vermiculite whenever it’s needed

4. Managing gnats is important! Fungus gnats feed on lisianthus roots, so managing them will help keep your young plants healthy. I use beneficial nematodes and sticky traps for fungus gnat management. Keeping algae in check helps manage gnats as well

5. Fertilize with a very diluted mix of fish fertilizer and water weekly or biweekly once the plants get their first set of true leaves

These plants take about 16-20 weeks from germination until they are ready to be planted, so patience is required if you take this on. I grow them indoors around 50-60 degrees under grow lights for the first 12 weeks or so.

Happy growing!!
