It’s true, we found our farm on Facebook marketplace (if you’re looking for land, I highly recommend doing this btw. It’s a great way to find for sale by owner listings!)

Since then, my husband and I have been working days, weekends, and evenings to turn this property into thriving, organic flower farm. Neither of us grew up on a farm or around farming (however I do have a degree in agriculture) so there have been a lot of lessons and skills learned as we go throughout this process. Make sure to follow along as we continue to scale our farm and business and turn it into something that will last 🌱🚜🌾🐛🌸

Spend a pretty typical day with me on my organic flower farm! Our main growing season is coming to an end, which means that we have lots of prepping beds, planting, and cleaning up old flowers to do before winter

Our farm is in Richmond, Kentucky and we grow certified organic cut flowers on about one acre and are at farmers markets in Lexington and Cincinnati

A few months ago, I posted a video about the price of farmland in the US and people had a lot to say about it 👀👀👀

If you don’t already come from land, buying property to farm on is usually one of the BIGGEST challenges that young and/or beginning farmers face. High land prices and interest rates can quickly eat away at the slim profit margins associated with agriculture, not to mention the cost of equipment, utilities, and infrastructure 💡

According to the USDA, 70% of farmland is expected to change ownership in the next 20 years. How can we ensure that land gets in the hands of folks that want to farm and farm sustainably?

HOW TO GROW LISIANTHUS FROM SEED (aka the only way to grow certified organic lisianthus)

1. Seed selection: most commercially available lisianthus seed will be pelleted (not certified organic). I’ve found that dissolving the pellet with a spray bottle or dissolving it in water makes a huge different with germination

2. SOIL BLOCKING have by far given me the best results with starting these as they encourage root growth and help provide better airflow to the plants, which can help reduce damping off (baby seedlings dying)

3. VERMICULITE on the surface of your soil blocks with help prevent algae growth surrounding your seedlings. I add another layer of vermiculite whenever it’s needed

4. Managing gnats is important! Fungus gnats feed on lisianthus roots, so managing them will help keep your young plants healthy. I use beneficial nematodes and sticky traps for fungus gnat management. Keeping algae in check helps manage gnats as well

5. Fertilize with a very diluted mix of fish fertilizer and water weekly or biweekly once the plants get their first set of true leaves

These plants take about 16-20 weeks from germination until they are ready to be planted, so patience is required if you take this on. I grow them indoors around 50-60 degrees under grow lights for the first 12 weeks or so.

Happy growing!! by @s.avsgarden

COLD Stratification is the process of chilling seed in a moist environment to improve germination and it’s critical for great delphinium!

As certified organic growers, we don’t have delphinium plugs available to us, so we have to start them from seed

To cold stratify delphinium seed you should:

1. Use fresh seed (don’t bother with old or expired for this!)
2. Soak the seed in water for 6-8 hours
3. Wrap the soaked seed in a paper towel and put the towel in a ziploc bag
4. Vent the bag and put the bag in the fridge (I keep mine in the butter compartment)
5. After 5 weeks, your seeds should have long enough roots to be potted up
6. Transfer seedlings to roughly 2x2 pots and grow them on until you are ready to plant them out by @s.avsgarden

This is tuberose and it adds a unique texture and incredible fragrance to floral arrangements which makes sense because the oil from the flowers is used to make perfume

Tuberose is in the same family as asparagus and is an easy to grow, drought tolerant plant that is grown from a tuber. These plants are native to central and South America and bloom in late summer. I plan on overwintering these here on my farm in zone 7a! by @s.avsgarden
