Banned Book Week, book 2 - Sold by Patricia McCormick
Sold was the #1 most challenged book in 2025. It tells the story of a girl from Nepal, who is sold by her stepfather into sexual slavery in India. The novel is written in a series of short, vignette-style chapters.
Aside from the many challenges it’s received, there are also numerous awards: Top 10 books of 2007, National Book Awards finalist, NPR Top 100 Books of 2007, just to name a few.
Why does this book continuously get challenged? Because some critics labeled its raw depiction of human trafficking and sexual slavery as “pornography”. 😐

I read this and wrote a paper on it in 7th grade and to this day it is one of the most heartbreaking stories I’ve ever read
