Sometimes the problem isn’t that people have failed us. Sometimes we’ve placed expectations on them that they were never responsible for fulfilling.

We expect friendships to heal wounds we haven’t addressed, fill voids we haven’t acknowledged, and provide a level of emotional security that we haven’t learned to cultivate within ourselves.

And when people fall short of those expectations, we call it disappointment. Sometimes we even call them bad friends.

But not every unmet expectation is evidence of a bad friendship. Sometimes it’s an invitation to examine ourselves.

Healthy friendships require more than finding the right people. They require becoming someone who knows how to love, appreciate, and experience people without making them responsible for our personal fulfillment.

That’s why I wrote The Mean Girl Manual: She Don’t Like You and That’s OK. Not just to help you recognize unhealthy friendships, but to challenge the unhealthy expectations and behaviors you may be bringing into them.

Because the goal isn’t just to have better friends. It’s to become a better friend, too.
