Romi was just six years old on October 7th, 2023. She and her younger sister were found in a car in Sderot. Her parents and a friend, who tried to help them, had been shot and killed. When rescuers approached the car, the first words Romi said were, “Are you with Israel?” She didn’t know who was approaching her. She didn’t know if she was safe. She didn’t know who she could trust. That sentence has stayed with me, which is why I etched them into this painting. We speak so often about those who were murdered on October 7th, as we should. But we also must speak about those who survived. About the trauma they carry, and the lives they now have to rebuild. Especially the children who have to grow up without the parents who were supposed to guide and protect them. The columns in this painting are inspired by the memorial in Sderot, where the city’s police station once stood. On October 7th, many were murdered there while fighting to defend their city. Today, these columns stand in their place. I visited this memorial myself, and there are so many stories there. I will share more with you soon. This painting is about remembrance, but also about survival. About the lives that were taken, and the lives that were forever changed. Never forget. #jewish #israel #painting #remember #zionist
