Harry Bramma was one of the most distinctive figures in English church music. His musical career left a lasting mark on the cathedral and church music tradition, leaving behind an enormous legacy.

Our Trustee, James Gurling OBE, pays tribute to his former Choirmaster and reflects on his time working alongside Harry.

One kitchen decision we definitely don’t regret is having a double sink 🤎

It might not be the most exciting kitchen feature but it’s one of those things you don’t realise how useful it is until you have one!

Reasons we love having our double sink:

1. Washing up and rinsing can happen at the same time without getting in each other’s way
2. One side for dirty dishes and the other for rinsing or keeping things clean
3. So much easier when cooking, especially when you’re moving multiple pans, chopping boards and prep etc
4. It keeps things feeling a little more organised even when the kitchen is busy
5. And if you have someone else helping in the kitchen. you’re not fighting over one sink

For us it’s just been so practical and we’d choose it again and again. Ours is from @wren

Would you have a double sink in your kitchen or would you rather have the extra worktop space?✨

💥🎆 Tchaikovsky – 1812 Overture, Op. 49
Boston Pops Orchestra – Keith Lockhart, conductor 🎼
Army cannons – fired during the concert 🪖

In a letter to his patron Nadezhda von Meck, Tchaikovsky warned that this overture would be very noisy, written without any affection, and that for that reason it would probably lack artistic merit. The commission had come from Nikolai Rubinstein, who headed the music section of the Moscow Exhibition and wanted a new work for the event. Before starting, Tchaikovsky had told his publisher Pyotr Jurgenson that he would not lift a finger as long as nobody commissioned anything from him. To the same patron he wrote that nothing was more disagreeable to him than composing for festivities, and he told the publisher that he had started work with an inexplicable aversion. The overture premiered officially in Moscow, and Tchaikovsky himself went on to conduct it 13 times.

Listen again and notice the instant when the camera, after the soldiers, leaves the conductor and shows the stage from far away: right after, a strong, deep thud sounds, wider than the shots in the soldiers' scene, and the image shows no flash at all.

This excerpt is from the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular of July 4, 2019, at the Hatch Shell, on the banks of the Charles River in Boston, with the orchestra conducted by Keith Lockhart. The concert was broadcast live on television, and the cut ends with fireworks bursting in the dark sky. The camera alternates between the illuminated bandshell and soldiers in camouflage uniforms beside a cannon at night, and one of them raises an open hand before several shots. Years later, Lockhart said that most Americans have come to think of the 1812 Overture as theirs.

Papoose says hip hop needs saving from corny people and the gatekeepers in power. Speaking with our correspondent @agirlfromharlem at an event he hosted last night, Pap said some of the greatest artists never get their shine because people in positions of power intentionally hold them back while pushing less talented artists as better.

He added that the most skillful artists get hated on the most, and that it’s not about materialism. “Some people hate you because of your aura. They hate the effect you got when you walk in the room.”

And if you want a feature, he says he has to hear and like your music first. “I don’t just take people money.”
