Transforming lives through choral and organ music 🎶
UK grant-giving charity supporting choirs, musicians, and the next generation 🤝
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
As the Trust marks its 70th Anniversary in 2026, we are honoured to receive a message from our Royal Patron, HRH The Duchess of Gloucester.

HRH The Duchess of Gloucester’s long-standing support recognises how, over seven decades our charitable impact has extended far beyond music itself, creating opportunities for young people to experience the joy of collective music-making, nurturing confidence, collaboration, and shared purpose across communities.

From Evensong in cathedrals and parish churches to inspiring composers across genres and generations, this living tradition continues to shape music and communities alike.

Our friends, colleagues, and supporters of cathedral music have signed an open letter calling for urgent action to protect and recognise English Sacred Choral Music as a Living Heritage.

We’re asking the UK Government to support the nomination for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status, ensuring this living tradition is protected, valued and sustained for generations to come.

Choral music offers world-class musical training, opportunity, education, and belonging for thousands of people. We believe safeguarding English Sacred Choral Music as an element of the UK’s intangible heritage would:

- Acknowledge its cultural and educational value
- Affirm its role in community life
- Help secure support for its continuation in an age of shifting values and financial pressures

The stewardship of sacred choral music in the UK involves meeting the daily costs of sustaining world-class music while navigating significant financial pressures. As musicians, educators, parents and supporters, we have seen first-hand the life-changing impact of cathedral music building confidence, discipline, wellbeing and community.

Today @exetercathedral, a new introit by Errollyn Wallen CBE, Master of the King’s Music, is to be performed for the first time during Evensong at our National Gathering.

The commission based on Psalm 96,  'O sing to the lord a new song', is through a partnership between Cathedral Music Trust and supporter Tom Hoffman, whose charitable trust has established an endowment to fund a new anthem every two to three years, in perpetuity, for cathedral, church and chapel choirs.

The aim is to bring new music by contemporary composers into the living repertoire of choral music. Errollyn Wallen's introit is the first commission through this endowment, written for the Choir of Exeter Cathedral. Its first performance also falls during Cathedral Music Trust's 70th anniversary year, making this a particularly special moment for us to support new music.

We are greatly looking forward to hearing this new work for the first time today in Exeter 🎉

🎶 100 years of BBC Choral Evensong

Today marks the centenary of a treasure in British broadcasting. Since 7 October 1926, BBC Choral Evensong has brought the sound of choirs, organists and sacred music from churches, chapels and cathedrals to listeners across the world.

Today, our CEO, Jonathan Mayes, and Chair of Trustees, Jonathan Macdonald, were at Westminster Abbey for the special centenary service, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. The service included music by Howells and Parry, alongside a new introit by Kerensa Briggs, composed especially for the occasion.

For the Trust, this anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate the importance of the cathedral music tradition, and the extraordinary window BBC Choral Evensong provides into the breadth and richness of the UK’s choral heritage.

Listen back to this afternoon’s live broadcast from Westminster Abbey via BBC sounds..

This year, our Christmas cards have had a very special creative touch ✨

We’ve been working with illustrator @rosiebrooksillustration to create five original designs inspired by cathedral music and the festive season.

Working in traditional pen and ink, and watercolour, Rosie brings together her background in both music and illustration. With a BA in Music from Durham University and a Master’s in Children’s Book Illustration, her work combines storytelling, atmosphere and imagination. Having worked with organisations including Oxford University Press, Classic FM, the Royal Ballet and Opera and John Lewis, we are delighted Rosie has brought her distinctive style to our Christmas cards this year.

Here’s Rosie sketching out 'Pipe Dreams' before adding splashes of colour to bring it to life.

🎄 Our 2026 Christmas cards are now on sale, with every purchase helping to support the future of cathedral music.
