On Sunday 8 November at 10:30am, hear our founder @andrewcsimpson in conversation with leading Australian and international creatives from Studio Ongarato and Space Popular, alongside The Guardian’s Deputy Culture Editor Sian Cain. Together, they’ll unpack the making of The Mall and explore the role of design as cultural production, sales mechanism and object of consumption. “AREN’T YOU SCARED?!” It’s the question I get asked the most. If you’ve been here a while, you’ll know my girls bring everything inside. Hatching lizard eggs on the kitchen counter, tadpoles living in jars, every beetle, snail and creature they find outside suddenly has a name and a home in here. And honestly? Yes. I’m terrified. Especially of the insects they love the most. But I just put my big girl pants on and do it, for their sake. And I’m doing so much better with it now so I guess it’s been helpful for me too! But I’m doing my absolute best not to pass that fear onto them. Because I learnt to be scared, I wasn’t born scared. And these little creatures are so wonderful, so harmless, so fascinating when you really look. More than anything, it’s so important to me that I teach my girls to love the world around them. To be gentle with it. To be curious about it, not afraid of it. To know that every little life has value. So we love them all here. Even the creepy crawly ones. “If children do not grow up knowing about nature and appreciating it, they will not understand it. And if they do not understand it, they will not protect it.
