So today I present to you a golden moment on the banks of the Red River, sharing my favourite garbage: a yellowed chunk of incised glass, the ornate handle of a ceramic jug, covered in pink transferware, and a sherd from a bowl or plate, half the decoration gone. But I can hardly stand how beautiful they are, despite but maybe because of their uselessness. I am also relatively useless: my main skill seems to be aching at the broken loveliness of this place I was born into and still inhabit. And then, sometimes, writing about it. So: are you useless too?

A few years ago I didn’t think so, but AI has eaten much of what I’m useful for. I’m lucky to be old, and to have a reliable job, but it’s strange knowing you’re among the last of something - an endling.
