It was a four bottlestopper and one lead three-leafed clover kind of day. And if that’s too cryptic, then watch the video, my friends. #bottlestopper #bottlestoppers #ilovebottlestoppers taken in Winnipeg, Manitoba by @janedayreader

Mike and I are both home, sick with colds, but I am consoled by the googly eyes on this radish at yesterday’s Wolseley Farmer’s Market. by @janedayreader

So I interviewed poet Canisia Lubrin about her “commitment to the work of words against the violences of the species and the mysteries of the cosmos,” and her fourth book of poetry, Bright Machine, for today’s Free Press. This is in advance of her event this Wednesday at McNally Robinson, where she will be in conversation with Chimwemwe Undi. taken in Winnipeg, Manitoba by @janedayreader

Fall things that made me happy: a squash growing on a chain link fence, a patch of grass washed with mid-afternoon sun that made me want to lie down and have a nap, a stolen handful of yellow grapes from a walkway between apartment blocks, also spitting grape seeds as I walked away, that the bittersweet pods have split, revealing their darker-orange/red underpinnings, scouring myself clean in the wind blowing over the Omand’s Creek train bridge, that the spot where we mudlark, whose upper bank was this year covered with garbage from a succession of encampments, was this week tidied by city crews, and a good stump-shroom. What are some of your favourite fall things? (No pumpkin spice allowed! Sorry-not sorry…) by @janedayreader

So today I present to you a golden moment on the banks of the Red River, sharing my favourite garbage: a yellowed chunk of incised glass, the ornate handle of a ceramic jug, covered in pink transferware, and a sherd from a bowl or plate, half the decoration gone. But I can hardly stand how beautiful they are, despite but maybe because of their uselessness. I am also relatively useless: my main skill seems to be aching at the broken loveliness of this place I was born into and still inhabit. And then, sometimes, writing about it. So: are you useless too? taken in Winnipeg, Manitoba by @janedayreader

I love how fallen leaves decomposed enough to dye the concrete sidewalk. They look like shadows. A heap of feathers. A spore print. by @janedayreader
