I’ve been valuing the experience of a literary deep dive since two recent reads, but this doesn’t mean everything good requires deep immersion. At the same time, I’ve also been enjoying three other books in bits and pieces—a collection of short short stories, a poetry collection, and an essay collection—for the past few days, books that are in conversation with one another, and which probe mundanity in the wonderful sense of things of this world. These books aren’t just all about shiny things either (though there is much of this in each of them!), but instead grit, mud, mudslides, homeless encampments, racism, all of which are also things of this world, undeniably, and I think it’s these books’ capacities to hold all of it that really makes me believe in every word the authors say. Clear-eyed, wondering, wandering, curious—together a veritable literary bouquet.

🌅 MORNING LIGHT - AUGUST 5, 2026 🌅

☀️📚 A new poetry chapbook is providing an intimate look at one of the most distinctive natural features in the city. Writer Ariel Gordon (@janedayreader) joined us in studio to tell us more about “A Mudlarker’s Diary”, which offers a window into her walks on the banks of the Red River, and the natural ways the river lends itself to flowing verse as opposed to prose.

☀️🎨 A collection of glassworks at the @mhcgallery is offering a hopeful look at combatting the climate crisis. Artist Bill Younger (@awry_art_creations) told us more about “WHAT?!?! in the World” and the natural inclinations towards light and optimism that glass has.

The rooms at the inn are spoken for, but the retreat table still has space.

Commuter spots are available for the Nook & Cranny Writing Retreat this fall.

From October 22–25, @janedayreader and I will be back at @bellaura.bb in Carman, Manitoba, for our annual autumn writing retreat: four days of guided writing, creative field trips, prairie light, good food, old-building magic, and the kind of literary company that helps your imagination loosen its shoulders.

If you live nearby, can stay with friends or family, or are happy to arrange your own accommodations, the commuter option lets you join the retreat experience even without a spot at the inn.

You still get:

✍ The workshops.
✍ The meals.
✍ The conversations.
✍ The field trips.
✍ The books and antiques and stained glass.
✍ The feeling that a 19th-century church might know something your draft has been trying to tell you.

If autumn has been calling to your writing life, this is your invitation.
