If your child has suddenly become someone you feel like you don’t fully know anymore — quieter, more closed off, spending hours in their room, more interested in friends than family — you are not losing them. You are just watching them become someone new.
Around age 10 or 11 this shift starts. And most parents are not prepared for it because nobody really talks about what puberty actually does beyond the physical changes. Their brain is literally rewiring. Their sense of self is forming. They are figuring out who they are and they need space to do that without feeling like every part of them is being watched and corrected.
This doesn’t mean they don’t need you. They need you more than ever. Just differently.
Learn what is happening inside them. Not just the biology but the emotional side of it. The mood swings. The need to belong. The sensitivity to how people see them. Talk to them about it. They will feel less alone in it.
They are not becoming your opponent. They are building their own world while still needing you as their strongest pillar. Be the lighthouse. You don’t control where the ship goes. You just make sure it always knows where safe ground is.
Correct them when you need to. But listen more than you speak. Acknowledge what they feel before you respond to what they did. Let them know they never have to perform a version of themselves to feel accepted at home.
That is the home a teenager will always come back to.
