The music your teen listens to might be telling you more than you think.

Music can be a powerful tool for teens to regulate emotions, process what they’re feeling, and make sense of their internal world. But what happens when the lyrics start to feel concerning?

Aja Chavez, our VP of Adolescent Services, explains what parents and caregivers should pay attention to, especially when themes of hopelessness, suicide, or aggression become a pattern.

Her advice is to get curious before judging your teen. Use it as an opportunity to ask questions, listen, and better understand what your teen may be experiencing.

If you’ve noticed changes in your teen’s mood, behavior, or the themes they’re connecting with, start the conversation, and if you’re concerned about their mental health, reaching out for professional support can help you both navigate what comes next.
