A 34-year-old #Texas inmate is pleading with a judge for his release after allegedly being sexually assaulted by another inmate while three others held him down. According to court documents, the attack happened inside the Jack Harwell Detention Center in McLennan County and was captured on surveillance video. Three inmates have since been charged with aggravated sexual assault and engaging in organized criminal activity, while a warrant has been issued for a fourth. The victim’s attorney, Mona Keathley, claims the assault occurred after a female jailer falsely identified her client as a pedophile to other inmates. She also alleges that two other jailers witnessed the situation and ignored his screams and cries for help. Keathley says her client is now experiencing severe emotional distress and remains in segregation without adequate access to medical care, hygiene products or phone calls to his family. The man was awaiting sentencing on a drug charge for which prosecutors had already recommended probation. The district attorney’s office says it does not oppose his release with GPS ankle monitoring while he awaits sentencing.

As someone who loves the ocean and often uses this space to speak up for its protection, I think it’s equally important to speak up about the safety of those who share it with us 🤍 Something I’ve been thinking about throughout all of this is how it can be so difficult for women to come forward, especially in small communities, unfamiliar countries, or situations involving people in positions of trust and influence. And I think what we’re seeing with so many women sharing their experiences is that speaking up isn’t always just about seeking justice for themselves. Sometimes it’s about protecting the next person, supporting someone else’s story, or making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen again. I was recently part of a conversation about these issues, a guy curiously asked why not more women report incidents when they happen There are so many reasons someone might not feel safe reporting an experience when it happens. Fear, uncertainty, shame, possible repercussions, or simply not knowing where to turn. That’s why accessible support systems, clear reporting procedures and accountability are SOOO important. I hope these conversations lead to meaningful changes within the ocean community, and that we continue creating spaces where people feel safe, both in the water and out of it. I’ve shared some resources in the comments for anyone who might need them. 🤍 And I'll share my experience with two of these alleged men in the next video. #oceancommunity #womensupportwomen #womensupportingwomen #freedivingcommunity
