Have you ever caught yourself saying, “I know exactly how you feel,” when someone is sharing something difficult? 💚
Often, we say it because we want them to know they’re not alone. We’re trying to connect by sharing a similar experience.
But sometimes, the most supportive thing we can do is make space for their experience without making it about ours.
Instead of jumping in with your own story, try saying:
✨ “Tell me more.”
✨ “What was that like for you?”
✨ “I’m listening.”
✨ “What do you need from me right now?”
Active listening isn’t about finding the perfect response. It’s about being present, staying curious, and letting the other person feel heard without rushing to relate, fix, or explain.
A question to ask yourself: Am I listening to understand, or waiting for my turn to speak?
Save this reminder for your next meaningful conversation. 📌
