Bahramov became famous around the world but especially in his native Azerbaijan after, as a linesman for the 1966 World Cup final in London, he indicated to the Swiss referee that he could award England a goal after Geoff Hurst's shot had bounced down off the crossbar. He was of the opinion that the ball had crossed the line as a result of which England went 3-2 up against West Germany in extra time. Hurst scored again later on to complete a hattrick in England's 4-2 win. Much, much later on a statue of Bahramov was unveiled in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on this day in 2004 with Hurst present at the unveiling.(see photo).
