After more than a century and tens of thousands of FA Cup ties, it remains the biggest score in the competition's long history. It wasn't so much that Charlie Bunyan had a bad match as that the gulf in class between the two teams was broader than the broadest ocean. PNE, giants of the English game at the time, were 12-0 up at halftime and they allowed Hyde, who were down to ten men, to bring on a sub. But even this didn't stem the flow of goals. Jimmy Ross, Preston's so-called Little Demon, helped himself to seven goals. Preston went on to reach the final and were so confident they'd win that they'd asked to be photographed with the Cup before the match started. The ref Francis Marindin suggested they should win the final first, which they failed to do, losing 2-1 to West Bromwich Albion. #f1 #ushp #PL #efl #celebritytraitors by @jonhendo5

Bahramov became famous around the world but especially in his native Azerbaijan after, as a linesman for the 1966 World Cup final in London, he indicated to the Swiss referee that he could award England a goal after Geoff Hurst's shot had bounced down off the crossbar. He was of the opinion that the ball had crossed the line as a result of which England went 3-2 up against West Germany in extra time. Hurst scored again later on to complete a hattrick in England's 4-2 win. Much, much later on a statue of Bahramov was unveiled in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on this day in 2004 with Hurst present at the unveiling.(see photo). #celebritytraitors #f1 #usgp #EFL #PL by @jonhendo5

It's no wonder Iremonger, all six feet five inches of him, was aggrieved with Notts County leading their away match against Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 and heading for their first victory of the season when the ref abandoned the match eight minutes from the end because of fog. He had a bit of previous, though, it seems, with a record of leaving his goalmouth to argue with officials mid pitch. But he was a true club legend who played for County from 1905-1925. A road adjacent to the ground is named after him. #PL #EFL #f1 #usgp #celebritytraitors by @jonhendo5

Well, Billy Jervis only ever played one Football League match and it was this one for Gillingham. Had the game been annulled - a distinct possibility given that it didn't go the distance - he might never been able to say he was a former Football League player. You have to say Gillingham did their best to get there in time for the scheduled kick-off - by car, bus, train and even plane - but it was not to be. #f1 #singaporegp #celebritytraitors #EFL #PL by @jonhendo5

Wilson scored all five goals when Boro beat Nottingham Forest 5-2 in a First Division match on this day in 1923 before he transferred to Chelsea a month later for what was then a record transfer fee for the west London club of £6,500. In all he made 238 appearances for Chelsea scoring 59 goals. He had fought in the First World War (1914-18) during which his left arm was severely damaged by shrapnel and was later amputated. #f1 #singaporegp #celebritytraitors #england #nationsleague by @jonhendo5

On this day in 2014, Newcastle fans, disgruntled as the club went through a sticky spell under manager Alan Pardew, unveiled this banner before a match at Swansea. It contained lots of Ls and only a scattering of Ds and Ws. Underneath, it read 'Not A Welsh Town. Our Form In 2014.' The club's form remained inconsistent - Pardew left for Crystal Palace in December - and although they climbed to fifth in the table at one point they ended up narrowly avoiding relegation. #f1 #bahraingp #Strictly #celebritytraitors #nationsleague by @jonhendo5

Back in the days when footballers were skint, Football League clubs used to be owned by the local brewers, builders, car dealers and their ilk. How long ago that now seems. In 2026, nine of the twenty Premier League clubs are American owned or part-owned: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham, Liverpool, Manchester United; Manchester City aee owned by the Abu Dhabi United Group; and Newcastle United are owned by a Saudi Arabia-led consortium. As fas as Skint can see only four are British owned: Brentford, Brighton, Tottenham and Coventry City. Not sure about the others. Sorry. #f1 #bahraingp #England #nationsleague #celebritytraitors by @jonhendo5

The traffic-lights in question were in Kensington High Street in West London. It was the late Sixties and the ill-tempered 1966 Word Cup quarter-final at Wembley between England and Argentina was still fresh in people's minds - especially in the mind of the eminent referee Mr Aston. It hadn't helped the situation at Wembley that there was no non-verbal way for the referee to communicate with players who did not speak his language. And right in front of Aston was the solution provided by a traffic-light communicating with him without saying a word. Which gave him the idea of using coloured cards, red and yellow, not only to communicate with players but with spectators and the media as well. The system was officially introduced at the 1970 World Cup. It was another six years before the Football League adopted it. The first players to see red in England were David Wagstaff of Blackburn Rovers and soon afterwards, in another match, George Best, who by now was playing for Fulham. #f1 #bahraingp #nationsleague #celebritytraitors #PL by @jonhendo5

All seemed dandy when Viv and husband Keith came to London to receive the cheque from Bruce Forsyth. She'd had to borrow a pair of tights from her sister because until she got her hands on the cheque she couldn't afford to buy her own. At King's Cross station before catching the train back to Yorkshire she told the press she was going to 'Spend, spend, spend!' She was as good as her word - spent the lot and was stony broke. Keith, meanwhile, had been killed in a car crash. A cautionary tale, if ever there was one. #england #nationsleague #f1 #bahraingp #celebritytraitors by @jonhendo5

The preliminary round was due to be played on Saturday 1st October, Burton Swifts had a Football League match that day in the newly formed Second Division. The League match took priority over over the Cup game so Burton brought not only the match forward by a couple of days, but also the kick-off, by several hours from a normal start time, so their players could go to work or fulfil other weekday commitments. Burton won the match 3-0 against the team who would become Coventry City and progressed through four more qualifying rounds before coming up against mighty (at the time) Preston North End of the First Division in First round proper. End of story. They lost that one 9-2. #fi #bahraingp #England #celebritytraitors #strictly by @jonhendo5

The double-digit win against Anderlecht came in the second leg in England. The first leg in Belgium two weeks earlier ended 2-0 to United with Dennis Viollet scoring the first goal. Viollet scored four more in the second-leg rout (including the one in the photo above) and Tommy Taylor netted a hat-trick. Billy Whelan and Johnny Berry also scored. (Tragically, Taylor and Whelan died in the 1958 Munich aircrash.) A crowd of 43,635 watched the return leg in Manchester which was played at Maine Road because Old Trafford didn't have floodlights. Chelsea had been due to be the first English club to play in the European Cup when the competition was launched in 1955 but were persuaded to withdraw by the Football League, largely due to the attitude of their xenophobic secretary Alan Hardaker. #England #nationsleague #engspa #f1sprint #azerbaijangp by @jonhendo5

It may surprise you, given India's unimpressive record as a footballing nation, that Bollywood has made a number of football-related films. They include Maidaan (meaning field) about Indian football's 'golden era' (1952-62), during which they reached the semi-finals of the 1956 Olympics, and Jhund (unorganised group) about a coach who changed the lives of children from a slum area by organising them into a football team. #nationsleague #f1 #azerbaijangp #PL #EFL by @jonhendo5
