🥀 Victorian mourning brooches 🥀

When Victorians lost a loved one, they wanted to make sure everybody knew about it.

From mourning capes, gowns, bonnets and these incredible pieces of jewellery, we know that mourning in the Victorian age was its own societal performance in some ways.

Victorians signified to their communities that they had lost a loved one in these ways because mourning came with its own societal expectations: widows in particular had to respect strict dress codes and timelines that could space years (Queen Victoria famously extended her mourning period long after the commonly prescribed two years).

To look at and study these pieces is to imagine the countless stories that come with them…

What do you think? Should mourning attire and brooches make a come back?

There is no common visual cues for people to know they are grieving and might not be at their best- I think something to show people you might need a little bit of extra care would be great.
