In 1888, a pinhole camera tracks the mysterious demise of an all-ladies ghost-hunting society…

Today we have Instagram, but the Victorians had the Police News…

Sensationalism was rife during the Jack the Ripper murders of 1888; London alone had 50 newspapers in print, all competing to sell the most papers…so what did they do? They made stuff up.

Whilst the content was often rooted in true events, papers like the Police News heightened and exaggerated the events and the depictions of them in their illustrations.

As you will see, violence against women was the key component…with many of them unnamed, or with information such as “corset pierced through” coming before their stories. It’s a shocking snapshot into another time, but one which sadly holds parallels to today.

Follow @snapshot_1888 for more as we delve into the forgotten women of 1888, the dark underbelly of Victorian london, and misinformation.

What if you could visit the very site where your Victorian ancestor lived in 1888?

Hazel and Nadia did just that, and they’ve taken us along with them.

Their ancestors, Fanny and Madam Evelyn, lived here at Madam Evelyn’s brothel during the Jack the Ripper murders. After a recent discovery of early reels of film which were taken of their ancestors, they reconnected to tell their stories.

Madam Evelyn and Fanny were part of the same ghost hunting society in 1888 - together, they teamed up with amateur inventor Tamworth, who documented their journey with the first moving image machine.

Follow @snapshot_1888 for more Victorian ghost hunting, seances and unsolved crime in Whitechapel.

And remember… don’t believe everything you see online 👻

🥀 Victorian mourning brooches 🥀

When Victorians lost a loved one, they wanted to make sure everybody knew about it.

From mourning capes, gowns, bonnets and these incredible pieces of jewellery, we know that mourning in the Victorian age was its own societal performance in some ways.

Victorians signified to their communities that they had lost a loved one in these ways because mourning came with its own societal expectations: widows in particular had to respect strict dress codes and timelines that could space years (Queen Victoria famously extended her mourning period long after the commonly prescribed two years).

To look at and study these pieces is to imagine the countless stories that come with them…

What do you think? Should mourning attire and brooches make a come back?

On the 30th of September 1888, the bodies of Catherine Eddowes and Elizabeth Stride were found on the dark streets of Whitechapel.

But out of the thick smog, the monster that emerged wasn’t that of a singular man, but the spectre of a sinister force at work in society: gendered violence.

“Jack the Ripper” was never caught, but many more than five women were murdered in Victorian London. Many, nameless and poverty stricken, did not make it into the history books.

Sensationalist papers like the Police News fostered mass hysteria around these murders, building the killer into a spectre that transcended urban legend and became an international celebrity.

But at the heart of this story, the women were forgotten. Real women, who laughed with their friends, huddled together for warmth at night, and shared intimate friendships despite the dark world they inhabited.

At @snapshot_1888, we are telling their stories. Follow us for more.
