I’m alive. I’d like to actually live. Not just make decisions I can explain to everyone else.

Some decisions are scary even when you know something needs to change. And yes, you might get it wrong. I have. But staying somewhere just because you’re scared of what comes next has a cost too.

I don’t want to look back and realize I spent my whole life trying to make it look right to people who weren’t even living it.

There are things I wish had gone differently. Wanting more out of my life isn’t one of them.

A couple of days ago I had to self arrest by headbutting a tree. I've been on this trail and bunch of times but it seems I needed

to relearn some hard lessons. While climbing down a steep slope I was holding on to the rope but like a total moron I was using

just one arm. My other was carrying my overly massive tripod.

One little misstep on some greasy mud and my already torn up shoulder lost it's tenuous grip on the rope and I went for an impromptu

roll down the slope. With the bear spray can poking me in the face and my tripod discarded I was totally out of control. My abrupt stop

was delivered by a sturdy aspen where a small piece of my forehead skin still resides.

I prefer to consider myself rather lucky.

After a few minutes of coming to my senses I got back on the trail and captured some lovely shots which you'll see here. All was good.

Here is a summary of the lessons I'd already learned years ago but needed to relearn. After that I'm going to ask for your advice:

Wear Gloves when roping

Use small camera bag specifically for climbing

Bring smallest/lightest tripod

Slide down on bum during tricky spots

Purchase new shoulder

The final tip is the one I need your help with. Clearly, I need some kind of emergency beacon device for when things go sideways. I've heard

you can get those watched based beacons but are they any good?

Do you have any advice on the best kind of gadget for when you're deep in the woods and canyons and might one day need emergency help?

Even if it's a flat tire where there's no cell coverage or getting lost in fog. What's the best modern tool for tricky situations?
