When the young and ambitious solicitor Arthur Kipps is tasked by his superior with visiting Eel Marsh House, the old mansion once home to the late Mrs. Drablow, he is expected to put her papers and affairs in order.
Once there however, a mysterious Woman in Black begins to haunt him and the old mansion, putting him through horrors and terror.
This was my first read for my October spooky season TBR, and it completely nailed the vibes I was going for! ๐๐
Having the story told from the main characterโs point of view, helped me connect with his thoughts and emotions, his fears and memories.
The days he spent at Eel Marsh House felt unsettling and terrifying. The sudden sounds in the mansion, the lingering presence of the Woman in Black, and the noises coming from the marshes felt completely real.
The novel is pretty short, more like a long tale, and at times I found myself wishing it were a little longer, just so that each event could take place at its own pace without feeling rushed.
The plot is interesting, and once you start reading you canโt help but keep going, in order to unravel the mystery of Eel Marsh House. The ending also took me completely by surprise! I wasnโt expecting it at all!
The Woman in Black is the perfect novel for this time of year. If youโre looking for a gothic tale full of eerie vibes, mystery, ghosts, and revenge, this is the book for you!
