A little appreciation post for this beautiful series! Every book was a 5 star read for me.
Amazing characters, an intriguing plot filled with political intrigue, and an original magic system; it was simply perfect! I already miss it so much! ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ’š

When the young and ambitious solicitor Arthur Kipps is tasked by his superior with visiting Eel Marsh House, the old mansion once home to the late Mrs. Drablow, he is expected to put her papers and affairs in order.
Once there however, a mysterious Woman in Black begins to haunt him and the old mansion, putting him through horrors and terror.

This was my first read for my October spooky season TBR, and it completely nailed the vibes I was going for! ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‚

Having the story told from the main characterโ€™s point of view, helped me connect with his thoughts and emotions, his fears and memories.
The days he spent at Eel Marsh House felt unsettling and terrifying. The sudden sounds in the mansion, the lingering presence of the Woman in Black, and the noises coming from the marshes felt completely real.

The novel is pretty short, more like a long tale, and at times I found myself wishing it were a little longer, just so that each event could take place at its own pace without feeling rushed.

The plot is interesting, and once you start reading you canโ€™t help but keep going, in order to unravel the mystery of Eel Marsh House. The ending also took me completely by surprise! I wasnโ€™t expecting it at all!

The Woman in Black is the perfect novel for this time of year. If youโ€™re looking for a gothic tale full of eerie vibes, mystery, ghosts, and revenge, this is the book for you!

Bait is a princess; kidnapped from her castle by a dragon, sheโ€™s taken to the Dungeon, a coven that is home to every beast and monster you could think of.
Adopted by goblins and schooled by Cornelius the talking skull, she grows up as one of their own, but her past eventually finds a way to catch up with her.

The story is told from Corneliusโ€™ point of view, and I really appreciated how his personality shines through, along with his sarcasm and witty remarks.
The writing style is very enjoyable, direct, and easy to follow. Everything felt smooth.

I found the characters to be well developed, even though they fit the usual archetypes of fantasy novels: an arrogant and vain dragon (who reminded me of Smaug), old wizards, and troublemaking goblins. The author gave them actual personalities and traits that made them feel like more than just familiar tropes.

The story felt like a fairytale to me: a cozy, classic tale of magic and found family. Donโ€™t expect a blood soaked and brutal fantasy filled with ruthless and morally grey characters! Think of it as a family friendly version of The Devils by Joe Abercrombie. ๐Ÿ˜‚

The pacing was good, and the story had the right amount of action. I did find it a little slow in the second half, but the ending totally makes up for it with plenty of action.

The Dungeon Book felt like the perfect cozy fairytale to read during the colder months, curled up in an armchair with a cup of tea and a fluffy blanket. If thatโ€™s the vibe youโ€™re going for, give this one a go!

The novel follows the lives of Lee, a student from the 21st century with a dark past and a secret, and Sen, a female samurai in 1877.
Their home hides a door that allows them to communicate through time, and after discovering it, their lives will never be the same.

I read this book in July, while I was on my Bookstagram hiatus, so Iโ€™m a little late with posting this review ๐Ÿ˜…

I had incredibly high expectations for this read; Japanese culture, samurai, horror and murders. All these elements made me so eager to dive into the story.

The prose is great, and so is the plot. Unfortunately, for some reason I wasnโ€™t really able to connect with the characters. Lee felt quite flat and monotonous, and at times his chapters were a little boring.
Sen was definitely better. Sheโ€™s fierce and independent, a young woman willing to prove herself and earn her fatherโ€™s approval, but ostracized by 19th century society.
Her chapters were my favourites by far; they were interesting and moving.

The pace at the beginning was a little slow, but in retrospect it was functional to the story and to the build up that followed.

I loved everything about the premise and the main themes of the book. Sadly, I didnโ€™t really get emotionally involved, and it just didnโ€™t click for me.

That said, the plot is interesting, and having so many mysteries to uncover definitely helped to keep me engaged with the story.

However, even though this book wasnโ€™t really a hit for me, hopefully Iโ€™ll still get around to reading Bat Eater; the premise seems incredible!

So, I think Iโ€™ve probably been a little too ambitious this year, but in my defense, most of these books are rather short!

This October will be filled with haunted mansions, witches, gothic vibes, and many more horrors. ๐Ÿ‚๐ŸŽƒ

Iโ€™m so excited to dive straight into all of these stories!

My journey with Japanese murder mysteries (which started with The Honjin Murders) never fails to amaze me.
In August I decided to give this one a try, and it was such a pleasant surprise!

The novel has a peculiar setting: the Apocalypse.
The world as we know it is about to come to an end, and humanity will be wiped from the face of the Earth; but someone decides that this is the perfect time to go on a k!ll!ng spree, leaving young Haru and Isagawa (her driving instructor) with a mystery to solve before the asteroid comes.

I absolutely loved the idea; it gave the novel a nice twist, and the author had the chance to explore many different themes, such as grief and depression.
I believe this allowed the book to have more depth; this isnโ€™t just a thriller!

Haru and Isagawa are the perfect duo: one is merciless while the other is full of empathy; one is closed off and emotionally guarded, while the other is easy going and an extrovert.
I really enjoyed their dynamic and the friendship that develops between them throughout the story.

The story is well-written and suspenseful: you can definitely feel the impending doom that is about to unleash.
The pacing of the novel is never slow or boring, and the action is at an all time high.

The only issue I had with this novel was the ending: it felt a little too abrupt to me. The author doesnโ€™t give you any clues, so in the end the culpritโ€™s identity feels like it comes out of the blue.
I was shocked by the revelation, but also a little underwhelmed, and it kind of ruined the experience for me unfortunately.

That said, this was a very good read and a great debut novel by a young author! I canโ€™t wait to see what her next work will bring us!

I read this book last April, before I actually went MIA here on Bookstagram ๐Ÿ˜…, but the story and the characters never really left me!

Honestly, I have nothing more to say about this trilogy.
The characters, the plot, the magic system; everything is just perfect to me.
The worldbuilding is rich and detailed, making the story feel completely real and believable.

The last book in the Green Bone Saga mainly focuses on the new (and old) members of the clans, and their contributions to the war and the events that follow.

Seeing everyone grow and change as people made me incredibly emotional; the ending, especially, was absolutely heartbreaking! I never wanted this series to end. It is definitely one of my all time favourites!

Lastly, I believe a shout out to Anden and Hilo is needed; theyโ€™re surely my two favourite characters!
Theyโ€™re both complex and layered, and they lead the No Peak Clan in their own unique ways.

Definitely one of my favourite series ever!

What if the only way out of an old mansion in the countryside is discovering the truth about a m*urder?
And what if every single day you wake up in the body of a different person?

The story follows Aiden Bishop, a young man who finds himself trapped at Blackheath House, home of the Hardcastles. His only way out of the place is to uncover the truth about Evelyn Hardcastleโ€™s death.

But why is he trapped? And why does he keep waking up in a different body every day?

Iโ€™ve had this book patiently waiting on my shelf for years, and for some reason, I never got around to reading it. I finally picked it up in August and, wow, I was immediately hooked!

At first, the plot felt a bit all over the place. We are immediately thrown into the story without any explanation beforehand, so needless to say, I was very confused ๐Ÿ˜…
That said, once you start to really get into the book, everything finally starts to fall into place!

I really enjoyed how all the characters are so unique and diverse. Each one has their own quirks and personality, and they all shape Aidenโ€™s experience in some way.

The pacing is thrilling, and the author keeps adding new mysteries throughout the novel, making it really difficult to stop reading.

I was also a huge fan of the ending! Safe to say, I really didnโ€™t see it coming at all!

If youโ€™re looking for a classic m*urder mystery to read this fall while curled up under a blanket, well, this is the perfect choice! ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ“š

Lately, Iโ€™ve been stocking up on summer reads, and this is how itโ€™s going so far! ๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿƒ
Sci-fi, dragons, quests, and some good old gothic vibes will keep me company for the next few months, alongside a few books I already own and canโ€™t wait to read.

Iโ€™ve just started Assassinโ€™s Apprentice and wow, I can already tell Iโ€™m going to have such a great time with this series! ๐Ÿฅน

Wow. Thatโ€™s it. Thatโ€™s my review ๐Ÿ˜‚

I really enjoyed Jade City, but the sequel? Even better!

Fonda Leeโ€™s writing is truly one of a kind. Itโ€™s rich, detailed, and immersive; you can almost see the scenes unfolding in front of you.

The characters are the true heart of the story. They are multifaceted and complex, and they are what really drive the narrative forward. Their decisions and emotions are never predictable, and they feel incredibly real.
I especially enjoyed Andenโ€™s growth; he is definitely one of my favorite characters!

The plot is also incredibly interesting, full of family drama and unexpected twists. It is like a fantasy version of The Godfather!

Iโ€™m currently heading toward the end of Jade Legacy, and I canโ€™t wait to see what is going to happen, even though at the same time Iโ€™m quite sad about leaving this series behind!

๐Ÿ’ญ Have you read the Green Bone Saga? ๐Ÿ“š
