To tell Ruth’s story, and to ground ROOTS in both her past and her present, we had to go to New Zealand.

It was last February, the heart of the film’s journey. Ten days, just the five of us: @ruthcrofty , @martingaff and 3 partners in crime behind the camera, @julien_rai , @andy_collet and @alexis_berg

Ten intense, full, beautiful days: from the ridges above Wānaka to the rain of Greymouth, from the winding coast of Punakaiki to the forests of Mount Aspiring National Park.

The landscapes were breathtaking, that’s New Zealan, right? Places are important but people are the key to understanding Ruth.

These were 10 days of profound encounters: the generosity of Clare and Frank, Josh’s unforgettable emotion, Jin’s essential role and, of course, Phil’s incredible voice.
