ROOTS is online!

Ruth Croft is mainly known and recognised for winning some of the most competitive trail and ultra trail races in the world. She’s also done silent meditation retreats and even a 10 day long full blown darkness retreat! And yet, letting people into her personal space and opening up about events that shaped the life she now lives, was one of the hardest things she’s ever done.

With this film, you’ll meet the human behind the runner, and what truly matters to @ruthcrofty

To tell Ruth’s story, and to ground ROOTS in both her past and her present, we had to go to New Zealand.

It was last February, the heart of the film’s journey. Ten days, just the five of us: @ruthcrofty , @martingaff and 3 partners in crime behind the camera, @julien_rai , @andy_collet and @alexis_berg

Ten intense, full, beautiful days: from the ridges above Wānaka to the rain of Greymouth, from the winding coast of Punakaiki to the forests of Mount Aspiring National Park.

The landscapes were breathtaking, that’s New Zealan, right? Places are important but people are the key to understanding Ruth.

These were 10 days of profound encounters: the generosity of Clare and Frank, Josh’s unforgettable emotion, Jin’s essential role and, of course, Phil’s incredible voice.

Roots (54 min) will be available to watch online tomorrow, Wednesday, October 14. taken in New Zealand by @alexis_berg

“Overtime running has become my comfort zone. It’s the place I know best, the thing that feels familiar.

Being in front of a camera is another story. For the West Coaster in me, or perhaps even the Kiwi, opening myself up to the outside world has never come naturally.

And that’s the contradiction I’ve wrestled with. Wanting to run, but not necessarily wanting the exposure that comes with it.

I’m learning, though, that there’s something important in challenging that instinct to stay out of sight. In slowly rewiring that part of me and finding the courage to let others in. Because we all have a story worth telling.

And I couldn’t feel more fortunate to have someone I trust wholeheartedly to see beyond the runner. Thank you Alexis Berg.”

“I’ve known Ruth for about ten years. For most of that time, I saw a strong, relentless, private athlete: reserved, mysterious, perhaps misunderstood.

When we started this project, Ruth sent me a letter written as a list. It set out what she wanted the film to show, subjects I had never expected, and a story she had never told anyone. Honestly, I was afraid those promises would fade away over time.

They didn’t. Ruth never backs down. When she says something, she means it. Everyone can see her talent. What I discovered is that her heart is even bigger. That’s what I want people to see with this film.”

My UTMB 2026 for @hoka_eu (5/5)

Everything feels familiar here, and yet I keep looking for something strange within it. Something I haven’t seen before, somewhere between the contradictions and the many faces of this big thing.
This was my 13th UTMB. Coming back to the same places, year after year, I find my own way forward by trying to shift my perspective and experiment with photography.
Perhaps it’s not so different from the runners who return again and again, each carrying their own quiet quest: a time to reach, a lost feeling, or simply an image of themselves they hope will endure.
And that was the idea behind this project we had with Simon : to gather photographers with a different sensibility, in a humble quest for renewal.

Thanks @lindetcharlotte , @flo_pernet , @benedict_evans and @simon.dugue
