By all means: do what you think is best for your child *and* be curious about why you believe what you’re doing is best.

If thinking about that brings up something for you, then that’s a clue.

I have autism and ADHD and I am so thankful I didn’t take those medications as a kid. They are not risk free and are also extremely difficult to stop once they are started, yet those risks are often downplayed or never brought up to parents and patients before starting them. My cousin was put on them and she hated the way they made her feel. She has been able to get off of them now and has paved her own way on a career path that uses her passions and creativity. ADHD and all forms of neurodivergence don’t have to be disabling in every case. I understand some individuals with autism may have higher support needs and I don’t want to downplay that by any means. That being said, I think that the more we focus on our perceived limitations and differences (rather than our strengths and abilities) and the more we pathologize our situation, the worse we feel and the more “symptomatic” we appear. I have definitely found this to be true. The effects of the internet and social contagion also contribute to a lot of negative outcomes too.

Ooof. THIS! Sometimes it’s hard to even convince the parent that ADHD is “a real thing” ☹️

Diagnosed at 30 and it took a lot of fighting stigma to get the help I need. Taking medicine made me realize it wasn’t all my fault or that I wasn’t just lazy 😭 I told my mom, about it and she was confused about why I would be ADHD and asked me how they figured it out. I was textbook for it…

I also want to acknowledge that I think we need to compleeeetely rename, reconsider, and revisit what we know as ADHD from a diagnostic perspective, what it looks like, access to culturally-informed and trauma-responsive evaluations, and how we support people who struggle with any neurodevelopmental condition or executive dysfunction—especially women and people who don’t fit the hyperactive white boy stereotype.

Before you feel compelled to comment any variation of “So are you saying…” or “What about…” please watch the entire reel and know that I am saying what I said. I am speaking about this one specific context. Yes, there are other contexts and nuances. My opinion does not reduce the significance of yours.
