The Evolution of Mickey ❤️
I’ve been doing iterations of this act for 2-3 years and it’s crazy to see how much I’ve changed and to reflect on how my environment has changed around me. I’ve been through the loss of partners, jobs, family members, my beloved little sweet bun… I am now a freelance artist, single, broke, 40 lbs heavier and happier + more confident + have more friends + feel more supported by my community than I’ve ever been in my life.
When I started, I gaged on stage every time I performed 😷 I knew zero things about a beat, still doing my makeup the same ways since high school. I do miss my first iteration of burlesque Mick in a lot of ways 🖤 it was slow and simple and sweet
I’m so proud that I am able to have a vision of a costume now and make it come to life! I hope to bring more *movement* back into my drag but I also think I’ve been learning how to command a room with my stillness and gaze - have the attention come to me instead of seeking it
✨ First few performances with @empowermentinheels at @threeclubs @threeclubsbar and then @thegraysonla (I highly recommend @empowermentinheels classes and open stage! I attended about twice a month for the first few years I was performing to keep myself on a regular schedule and practice being comfortable not gagging on stage)
✨ Next iterations of Mickey we’re for the Crown, a drag king competition hosted by @kingphantom_2 at @hamburgermaryslb - first for the Season 1 Disney challenge in the summer of ‘25 and then for the Season 2 Finale (Challenge: Disney Villain) last Sunday
✨ Some Mickey’s don’t have much documentation and are lost to time BUT my first iteration of “Scary Mickey” was for my FIRST EVER AUDITION for @d.i.v.o.s Queen of Halloween - a seasonal competition series @mickysweho that I went on to be CROWNED WINNER (!!) this past summer 💗
✨ Finally this past weekend I got to sprinkle in some mick madness with @hiiiii_kiki @vine_lb and for the drag competition I am currently in, The Queen or King for All Seasons Challenge No. 3 Black Valentine @hamburgermaryslb hosted and judged by @psycadella @deltawork @bigdeelish @cadeyyboyy +++
