Part of benevolent sexism is when seemingly polite or protective behavior comes with an underlying expectation that women owe men something in return. Thank you @farida.d.author for another thought provoking conversation starter. #feminism #patriarchy #sexism #chivalry #safety

It's the same people men/women both that say they were robbed of feeling good by doing something for you, because you did it for yourself or didn't ingraciate yourself to them for their gesture.

No one is required to speak to another person simply because they acknowledged their presence in such a simple way. Yes it’s theoretically kind to open the door for someone but what if he does it in a creepy way, or she doesn’t speak English, or is upset about something, or wrapped up in her own thoughts, or 1000 other reasons why she isn’t acknowledging him? Men can be such babies.

I was a hostess at a restaurant and they required us to hold the door for everyone exiting. Some men would refuse to go through if I was holding it open. What an odd way to live

For people in general but for mostly men because they get butt hurt the most over not getting acknowledged if something whatever it may be was done should just be done because that is who you are not because your expecting something in return. Don’t do things for a reaction because then it’s fake be a good person 💙🩵🩷💜💚

I hold the door open for men and so often they REFUSE to go through it.

A lot of drivers behave this way too. I’d they let a pedestrian/cyclist cross (regardless of its a marked or unmarked crosswalk or “jay walking”). They get furious if you don’t wave and say thank you despite it often being the law to give the right of way to others. It’s wild.

Hell, I am 67 yr old woman, and will hold a door anyone; even if it’s someone younger than me, or if it’s a male! Yes, a thank is nice, but doesn’t mean I won’t stop doing it, or would get mad at someone for not verbally appreciating a kind gesture. I don’t do stuff like that for the gratitude.

Try honking at a man when you're driving in traffic! He'll follow you for BLOCKS just to pull up beside you to call you names!! ...if he doesn't pull in front of you to keep you from driving away from him - while he gets out of his car to pound on your car!! (Yes, this happened to me while driving.)

How about when a man is holding the door and you walk Through and then his girl walks in just after you and she makes a point to tell you he wasn't holding it for you . hey sis its not that deep😂

Ultimately, I think probably both things are true. I put the energy out that I hope to receive and am disappointed when I don't. That is true. Thanks for the perspective 😊

People can simply be rude. I've lost it in the supermarket when you hold back the trolley to make space for the person and they don't say thanks. It's just rude what ever your age or gender.

What kind of horrible people hold the door only for recognition and praise i do it for me because i want to be helpful and kind and a respectful member of my community. Im not going to lie it makes me happy when people show appreciation but im not expecting praise because i choose to do something its not a transaction im forcing people into. Does being kind and helpful not make you feel good about yourself without the acknowledgment?

I always say thank you. I take it as kindness. I will also happily hold the door for others including men. I expect nothing in return. I also gesture for men to get on the elevator before me. Does not offend me at all. ❤️

The story she is telling about the man is 100 % true. Happened 2 towns over from me in 2022 at a family dollar. It’s sickening.
