“I want to take a moment to thank God that I’m alive and well with you today.”
These are the words Stevie Ray Vaughan would say to start a monologue from stage every night while playing the song “Life Without You”. It was his mission, his calling, his purpose. He used the concert stage as a pulpit to share about the addiction to alcohol and drugs that started when he was 9 years old and stayed with him for the next 23 years.

At 32 years old, Stevie Ray Vaughan had been reborn. He became an inspiration to those battling addiction, inspired people to get back in touch with themselves, learn to forgive themselves and love selflessly again. His near death experience from his own addiction would lead him to tell people that he realized he was living on borrowed time. Stevie was so confident in the 12 step program that he recorded his new album full of songs inspired by the treatment and named the album “In Step”. Always a spiritual person, Stevie dug deep into looking for answers beyond the broken world that only ever guided him down a path of destruction. Photographer Bill Williams would attend as many shows as possible and meet with Stevie, bassist Tommy Shannon and others in the road crew to share and discuss Bible verses.

Three years after achieving sobriety, Stevie Ray Vaughan would tragically die in a helicopter crash following a concert in Alpine Valley, WI on August, 27th 1990. Along with his birthday on October 3rd, this would be a day many people remember Stevie. But, today, October 13th would be the day that I believe Stevie would want us to remember him. This was the day that marked his sobriety. This was the day he celebrated and lived for every day for the last 3 years of his life.
