Putting this post out to answer some recent questions :
1. I love the team @oneoceandiving I’m so proud of each of them & the work they do every day educating people from all around about the importance of sharks while keeping them safe, teaching methods of coexistence, collecting marine debris & noninvasive data. Together we’ve helped move the needle to get sharks protected here & around the world with your support
2. Check my most recent highlight & reach out to them directly to learn about what it’s like at One Ocean Diving. Every year we strive to improve in all we do (including our training and brief)to increase our positive impact & help our community like we do with reef & beach cleanups, free educational outreach events, posts for more than 10 years. When the floods hit North Shore earlier this year we paid our jawsome team to go help clean the beaches & neighboring homes 🩵
3. Training to be a shark-safety diver is, and should be, very tough. You wouldn’t want your limbs or family members to be guided by someone who never trained to handle sharks when they are tired or having an “off-day.”
4. You cannot learn to do what we do in a book or university, there’s no substitution for time in the water so people train extensively for months & part of that training is a daily recap social post they get paid to make so they are not only training for in-water work, but also for communication & sharing with the public in social media for the community too. Passing on knowledge to help others, which is why I choose to use social media.
5. Social Media has also unfortunately become a place where some people spread misinformation & derail conversations off of conservation & other more serious things.
6. I went through a lot when I was younger, things I’ll never talk about because I chose for them to make me stronger = I’ve experienced the not nice side of people so much, but I’ve also met & tried to help many other good people along the way. I choose to stay positive & thank you for your support for the sake of my team who are like ohana to me & shark conservation, because the sharks are like ohana to me too & I will continue to look out for th

Society has gone soft. 30 days “unpaid” is not difficult. If you can’t handle it perhaps it’s not the line of work that’s right for you. I’ve personally had to tell an intern what they were doing was unsafe and they could seriously injure themselves. Their response was I’m an adult and can take care of myself. I than went on to explain her actions not only affected her safety but others as well. At that point she shut up and understood. Welcome to the soft society

Three year non compete and an NDA? Yikes. I see some sort of lawsuit in the future, especially with regards to the NCA and 30 day no pay training.

Nobody is forced to sign an NDA. If you don't like it don't sign it. It's 100% your responsibility. If you don't like the extreme pressure that a high level, technical, precise, serious and unique job like this entails, don't work there. You're probably not a good fit. You are in control of your decisions. Sometimes in life you get spoken to in a harsh way or somebody has a bad day and doesn't cater to your specific needs for polite communication. Welcome to the world of humans and welcome to the adult workforce. I've never had a job where I was spoken to in the exact perfect way that I would like. It doesn't happen. Get thicker skin and learn how to communicate from your end if your needs aren't met. If someone is doing something illegal speak up to the correct authorities. Those are the empowering options available to all of us at any given moment. None of us are victims.

people talking and sharing about their experiences does not make them any less strong…honestly the fact that they’re willing to be vulnerable and stand up for themselves and others speaks to their strength AND character.

In my opinion, the most humane way to move through the world (as a business owner and a human) is to take some responsibility. There is always some truth to these things, even if you're not yet aware of your part. And there are receipts.

I am very sad to hear about Michelle’s experience with your company. she consistently went above and beyond, yet she was treated unfairly in return. I hope you will take the time to hear her perspective, read her experiences, review the situation carefully & write her a letter. She deserved to feel valued and respected. @shelle_belle_ I have gone on a tour with @oneoceanfreediving and won’t be returning or recommending this company until I know @shelle_belle_ has been treated with the respect and an apology she deserves!

Can you please explain the reason for a 3 year non-compete clause that essentially makes people have to move away from their previous homes to continue to pursue the same type of work? Thank you for your clarification.

We went diving with @oneoceandiving over 10 years ago and it is one of the most incredible experiences that we still talk about to this day. Ocean was not there that day, we were with Juan and I can’t say enough great things about him. When we go back to the North Shore, we will absolutely book again!
