Vagabond is a legendary samurai manga written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue. Inspired by the novel Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa, it follows the journey of the legendary Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi.
The story begins after the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, where a young and aggressive Shinmen Takezō survives alongside his childhood friend, Matahachi Hon'iden. Takezō is feared for his violent nature, but his life changes when he encounters the Buddhist monk Takuan Sōhō, who gives him a new name: Miyamoto Musashi.
Musashi begins travelling across Japan, challenging powerful opponents and striving to become the strongest swordsman under heaven. Along the way, he encounters legendary fighters, including Sasaki Kojirō, and faces difficult battles that challenge not only his physical abilities but also his beliefs about strength and greatness.
As his journey continues, Musashi gradually discovers that becoming stronger isn't simply about defeating other people. Through failure, loneliness, relationships and self-reflection, he begins to understand the meaning of life, compassion and inner peace. His greatest challenge becomes understanding himself rather than merely proving his superiority over others.
