“I was drawn to the idea that something so intricate, delicate and beautiful could emerge from such harsh conditions.”
Dana Kamal on Coalescence, her installation of hand-built porcelain forms in MONOCHROMA 2.
The work begins with the desert rose, a crystal that forms when sand, heat and pressure come together over time. She finds the same pattern in the country around her: “Like the desert rose, the UAE is shaped by many elements, different nationalities, different languages, cultures, backgrounds, and people living alongside one another and supporting each other.”
The pieces are hand-built from parian, a translucent, luminous porcelain. What she hopes they carry is “a collective experience, one shaped not by uniformity, but by the coming together of distinct parts, resulting in something enduring, resilient, and whole.”
Second of a series of artist interviews from the exhibition.
