Elon Musk declared Thursday night that the future finally has flying cars after Tesla unveiled a next-generation Roadster capable of dramatic airborne stunts at a SpaceX test facility in Texas.⁠ ⁠ At the livestreamed event near McGregor/Waco, the two-seat electric sports car used a combination of underbody suction fans and cold-gas thrusters—powered by ultra-high-pressure air tanks and 10 nozzles developed with SpaceX to climb a steep curved ramp, cling upside down, launch off, flip in mid-air, and land under control. In another sequence it leaped over a lineup of other Teslas before accelerating. Musk called the technology the result of pairing “the world’s best car company and the world’s best rocket company.”⁠ ⁠ The prototype, operated remotely “to make sure we don’t kill anyone,” also posted a claimed 0-to-60 mph time of 0.81 seconds during the demonstration, with Musk saying production versions should do better. Tesla lists target top speeds above 230 mph and an eventual goal approaching half the speed of sound (roughly 383 mph). Production is slated for 2028.⁠ ⁠ Musk has teased a SpaceX thruster package for the Roadster since its 2017 reveal, even as he earlier expressed skepticism about everyday flying cars. On X he posted simply: “Turns out the future does have flying cars.” The company is offering different configurations, including a high-performance road version, a Thrust model with rear thrusters, and an invite-only Rocket variant with a fuller flight system (single-seat in some descriptions). ⁠ ⁠ The flying model is not yet approved for public road use, and Musk acknowledged it is “not necessarily a safety-optimized car” and that legality is unclear in all jurisdictions. Regulatory questions remain around FAA oversight, safety certification, and practical everyday use.
