🚨 NO MORE GUARD JUMPING? GOOD. LET’S TALK ABOUT ATHLETE SAFETY. 🥋
Guard jumping has been part of BJJ for years, but should winning a match be worth risking your opponent’s knees?
When an athlete jumps into guard, both competitors can be exposed to an uncontrolled landing, awkward twisting and sudden loading through the knees and ankles. The person jumping isn’t the only one at risk.
📊 Here are the facts:
🥋 A study surveying 1,140 BJJ athletes recorded 1,052 injuries over three years.
⚠️ However, these figures cover BJJ injuries generally — they do NOT tell us how many injuries are specifically caused by guard jumping. That being said one wrong jump could cost an athlete their entire career.
The real question is: why wait for more injuries before prioritising prevention?
You can still play guard. You can still be tactical. You can still win.
But there is a difference between taking a calculated risk and forcing your opponent to absorb the risk of your landing.
🥋 PROTECT THE ATHLETES. EVOLVE THE SPORT.
💬 What do you think? Should guard jumping be banned at every belt level, or should experienced athletes be allowed to decide for themselves? Should more organisations follow suit?
