This Thursday we’re watching Son of Ingagi (1940), one of the earliest surviving sci-fi/horror films to feature an all black cast. The screenplay was written by the trailblazing Spencer Williams, who also plays Detective Nelson in the movie.

The story is centered on newlyweds who inherit the estate of a wealthy, quippy mad scientist, Dr Helen Jackson (played by Laura Bowman), and her treasures… including the monster she created.

The first and last slides are Son of Ingagi’s original Lobby Cards. Produced to promote films, lobby card prints featured stills decorated with vibrant colors and sometimes thematic illustrations. They were displayed in theatre lobbies to draw audience members into the world of their films.
