POSTS STORIES REELS
This evening we’re watching horror veteran Jacques Tourneur’s I Walked with a Zombie (1943) produced by Val Lewton. The pair also collaborated on horror classics Cat People (1942) and The Leopard Man (1943) Loosely inspired by Inez Wallace’s article of the same title, Jane Eyre, and Haitian folklore, the story unfolds on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Sebastian, haunted by the suffering its people endured under colonial rule. A Canadian nurse arrives to care for a woman trapped in a mysterious, trance-like state and encounters the island’s spiritual traditions as she searches for a way to heal and potentially free her patient. It’s a hazy, atmospheric nightmare. The first slide features an original lobby card used to promote the film during its theatrical release. 𖣘 See you tonight at 8pm 𖣘 by @cinemabeento
This Thursday we’re watching Son of Ingagi (1940), one of the earliest surviving sci-fi/horror films to feature an all black cast. The screenplay was written by the trailblazing Spencer Williams, who also plays Detective Nelson in the movie. The story is centered on newlyweds who inherit the estate of a wealthy, quippy mad scientist, Dr Helen Jackson (played by Laura Bowman), and her treasures… including the monster she created. The first and last slides are Son of Ingagi’s original Lobby Cards. Produced to promote films, lobby card prints featured stills decorated with vibrant colors and sometimes thematic illustrations. They were displayed in theatre lobbies to draw audience members into the world of their films. 𖣘 See you Thursday night at 8pm 𖣘 by @cinemabeento

Tonight we’re watching Xala {1975}, directed by Ousmane Sembène and based on his novel of the same name. The political satire follows El Hadji, a wealthy Senegalese businessman whose upholding of status, and European ideals leads to a humiliating curse of impotence. As his personal crisis unfolds, the film exposes the corruption, greed, and the sometimes hollow behavior of post independence elites. There are many topics in this film that make for interesting discussion including the fact that although it appears to be a time capsule film it is as socially and politically relevant today as when it was first made. A nice mention/reference in the film is made to “Kàddu” which was the first Wolof language newspaper printed in Senegal, a publication which Sembène and a group of writers published in the 1970s. 𖣘 see you soon, tonight at 8pm 𖣘 by @cinemabeento
Tonight we’re watching “Girl 6” {1996}, directed by Spike Lee and written by Suzan-Lori Parks. Bold, vibrant, and subversive, Girl 6 spirals through themes of objectification, control, and sex work. The film navigates stereotypes placed on women (and on its protagonist, played by Theresa Randle) as ‘objects’ of desire, bending and challenging agency at every turn. Loads of cameos flicker through the film: Naomi Campbell, Quentin Tarantino, Madonna, Jennifer Lewis, Halle Berry, Debra Wilson and more alongside an unforgettable soundtrack by Prince (!!!) 𖣘 see you soon, tonight at 8pm 𖣘 by @cinemabeento

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD | 1968 | George A. Romero | Thursday October 30th | 8:00pm “When there’s no more room on earth, the dead will walk the earth.” A ragtag group barricade themselves in an old Pennsylvania farmhouse, trying to survive a horde of flesh eating ghouls ravaging the Northeast. Innovative and raw, George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead reimagines horror as social reflection holding a mirror to a world unraveling with Duane Jones (our same unforgettable lead from last week’s Ganja & Hess) as its protagonist. The struggle for survival stands as proof that the greatest horrors on earth aren’t far beyond imagination. 𖣘 see you thursday night at 8 pm 𖣘 & yes, it’s a weekday but if you’re feeling whimsical, costumes are encouraged. by @cinemabeento
GANJA & HESS | 1974 | Bill Gunn | ** THIS THURSDAY** October 23rd | 8:00pm @palmmoments “you’re into horror movies… I can dig it” After being stabbed with an ancient, germ-infested knife, an anthropologist finds himself with an insatiable desire for blood. Bill Gunn’s Ganja & Hess is an underrated art horror gem dreamlike and unique. It’s full of layered abstraction, a deconstructed horror film that looks at spirit and desire in ways that still feel wildly ahead of its time. 𖣘 see you thursday night at 8pm 𖣘 by @cinemabeento
