A fatality inquiry report says catastrophic brake failure and neglected repairs contributed to the Columbia Icefield tour bus crash where three people passed away and 14 others were seriously injured in July 2020.

The findings, reported October 14, describe worn brakes, inadequate inspections and concerns about braking performance that were not addressed. The inquiry heard that the driver had previously reported the vehicle was not stopping quickly enough.

The Ice Explorer rolled down an embankment while travelling toward the Athabasca Glacier in Jasper National Park. The report also identified the vehicle descending in neutral, the steep slope and the absence of seatbelts as contributing factors.

Recommendations include clearer inspection records detailing when inspections occurred and what work was completed. The operator has since added seatbelts and changed driver training.

Again? Theres literally no need for these vehicles on or near the glacier. You can simply walk as I did in 2019

How was this 'tour' even operating in JULY 2020? The world was beginning to ease restrictions but a large group of tourists on a bus seems irresponsible!

I hope the bus was full of Indian tourists.

We visited here in September and walked but saw these buses operating, I think these buses are the epitome of ignorant, money hungry humans. The smell of the fuel and noise as they’d struggle breaking.. the fact they drive into the glacier. I think it’s appalling. Canada is such a beautiful country. Why do humans feel the need to destroy everything?!
