Thousands gathered in Calgary on Thursday night as Prime Minister Mark Carney urged Albertans to keep the province in Canada ahead of Monday’s referendum.

Canadian flags flew from hockey sticks and supporters wore Team Canada jerseys as Carney addressed the Forever Canadian rally. The Prime Minister’s Office estimated at least 5,000 people attended.

Carney acknowledged frustrations in Alberta but warned that pursuing separation could bring years of uncertainty. He told the crowd the outcome was not decided and that turnout would matter.

The October 19 vote asks Albertans whether the province should remain in Canada or move toward a second, binding referendum on separation. Thursday’s rally brought that choice before a large Calgary crowd just days before voting day. taken in Calgary, Alberta by @yyc

For weeks, a homemade sign criticizing Liberal spending sat on a front lawn in Calgary’s Wildwood community, according to a resident who shared these photos on Reddit.

Then the resident spotted it along Spruce Drive, beside a row of “Stay in Canada” signs.

The other photos show a larger display outside a home, with handwritten messages targeting Mark Carney and blaming Liberal policies for issues including taxes, debt and inflation. One sign describes choosing Canadian unity as choosing “Liberal communism.”

Together, the photos show how sharply different political messages are appearing just steps apart in the neighbourhood.

A Calgary truck driver received $1,674 in tickets after police found an unrestrained toddler inside a semi truck with numerous safety defects on a B.C. highway.

BC Highway Patrol says officers stopped the truck near Malakwa on September 26 after noticing it had no working taillights in heavy rain and darkness. Details were released on October 14.

Police say the inspection uncovered defective brakes, missing windshield wipers, bald tires and a diesel leak. The driver’s cab was held together with ratchet straps, and a load of steel bars was not properly secured.

A one year old child was being held by their mother, who was also not wearing a seatbelt, according to police. The truck and trailer were immediately removed from the road and cannot be licensed again until all defects are repaired. taken in Calgary, Alberta by @yyc

A fatality inquiry report says catastrophic brake failure and neglected repairs contributed to the Columbia Icefield tour bus crash where three people passed away and 14 others were seriously injured in July 2020.

The findings, reported October 14, describe worn brakes, inadequate inspections and concerns about braking performance that were not addressed. The inquiry heard that the driver had previously reported the vehicle was not stopping quickly enough.

The Ice Explorer rolled down an embankment while travelling toward the Athabasca Glacier in Jasper National Park. The report also identified the vehicle descending in neutral, the steep slope and the absence of seatbelts as contributing factors.

Recommendations include clearer inspection records detailing when inspections occurred and what work was completed. The operator has since added seatbelts and changed driver training. taken in Calgary, Alberta by @yyc

Calgary’s crackdown on loud vehicles is showing results on 17 Avenue SW, according to new monitoring data released by the City on October 13.

During Operation Silent Night’s enforcement hours in August, recorded loud vehicle events dropped from 357 in 2025 to 267 in 2026. That represents a 25.2 per cent decrease compared with the same period last year.

The findings come from a noise monitor near Tomkins Park. Across the full period analyzed, including hours outside active enforcement, loud vehicle events fell by 10.7 per cent.

The City says the strongest improvements occurred while officers were actively enforcing the rules. It also notes that weather, traffic volumes and special events can affect noise levels. taken in Calgary, Alberta by @yyc

A fossil found near Drumheller is offering a surprising glimpse into Alberta’s prehistoric food chain.

University of Alberta researchers say tooth marks on the jaw of a young Albertosaurus likely came from a much smaller raptor feeding on its remains. The finding represents the first known evidence of a raptor feeding on a tyrannosaur.

The Albertosaurus was approximately eight years old and around six metres long. Researchers believe it died of unknown causes before being scavenged, rather than being killed by the smaller dinosaur.

A member of the public reported the fossil in 2022. Staff at the Royal Tyrrell Museum later spotted the tooth marks while preparing it, helping launch the investigation into what left them behind. taken in Calgary, Alberta by @yyc

Young patients at Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary now have more choice at mealtimes following the launch of a new menu and room service model.

The approach lets children staying in hospital order meals closer to when they are ready to eat, with more familiar food options designed specifically for young patients.

The expanded menu includes smoothies, meals suited to children and options for different dietary and cultural needs. An app with pictures also helps younger patients see and select their meals.

Alberta Health Services says the changes aim to make mealtimes more comfortable and enjoyable while supporting children’s nutritional and recovery needs. taken in Calgary, Alberta by @yyc
