I was recording some reps yesterday because she was nailing a change of direction drill we were doing. Rewatching it today I realized I caught this conversation too.

Words carry weight, especially at her age. Most of us can remember the first time a woman in our lives talked negatively about their body. Typically the word “big” is being used. At her age developmentally she’s starting to associate words with certain things. Her brain is using pattern recognition to file adjectives into the good or bad folder.

I absolutely will NOT play a part in having a young girl think the word “big” inherently has a negative connotation. I want her to be big, to take up space, to understand the importance of having muscle development.

These little conversations are what shape children. She likely will never remember this conversation but her brain subconsciously will remember that someone used the words “big” and “strong” in a positive way. We can shift the narrative but it has to start with us.
