I was recording some reps yesterday because she was nailing a change of direction drill we were doing. Rewatching it today I realized I caught this conversation too.

Words carry weight, especially at her age. Most of us can remember the first time a woman in our lives talked negatively about their body. Typically the word “big” is being used. At her age developmentally she’s starting to associate words with certain things. Her brain is using pattern recognition to file adjectives into the good or bad folder.

I absolutely will NOT play a part in having a young girl think the word “big” inherently has a negative connotation. I want her to be big, to take up space, to understand the importance of having muscle development.

These little conversations are what shape children. She likely will never remember this conversation but her brain subconsciously will remember that someone used the words “big” and “strong” in a positive way. We can shift the narrative but it has to start with us. by @coach.tfox

That’s a wrap on year 2

This season is one I’ll always remember. The growth that was made on an individual and team basis is unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

When we started the season the vast majority of our team was comprised of girls who’d never played the sport before or had very limited experience. I vividly remember our first game because 90% of the time I went to sub someone in they had to ask which position was which and where it was on the field. We went on to end our season with a 5W, 3L, 2T record.

Our record isn’t the reason I’m proud. I’m proud because this is the bravest group of kids I’ve ever coached. Despite being mostly inexperienced they played with absolute fearlessness and grit. They weren’t intimidated by the skill of other teams whatsoever. They had the courage to try and fail 100x until they could finally get it right. They never gave up and consistently cheered each other on until the very end.

I’ve loved every single second of coaching this team. My philosophy with coaching has always revolved around the belief that having players who work hard for you + respect you, and having great personal connections with players, don’t have to be mutually exclusive things. This team proves just that. We had SO many laughs this season but when it was time to take care of business that’s exactly what they did.

As always, I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to coach young girls and help them fall in love with the sport that my world revolved around at their age. I see so much of myself in them. Coaching is truly my greatest passion in life and I have nothing but gratitude for this entire experience.

What an unforgettable season.
