Yesterday, the Board of Education took an important step toward ending the public school lottery and giving families the certainty they need to put down roots in our city.

Starting in the 2028–29 school year, families will know which neighborhood public elementary school their children are assigned to based on their home address, while retaining choices that reflect the incredible diversity of San Francisco.

I am also pleased that this direction includes a commitment to ensuring our schools have the resources they need, so parents can feel confident that whichever school their children attend, they will find a welcoming environment where they can learn and thrive.

I want to thank the Board of Education and SFUSD leadership, including School Board President Phil Kim and SFUSD Superintendent Maria Su, for helping make San Francisco a city where more families can build their futures.

BOOOOOO!!!! Shame on you BOE, Superintendent Dr. Su and Mayor Lurie. You’re now forcing families to have to choose between sending their kids to shitty failing schools in their own neighborhoods or likely leave the city since they probably can’t afford to live in the wealthier areas w/ better schools and you’ve given zero time or effort to even think of fixing the failing schools for those families. You should have offered neighborhood schools first, then allowed those that wanted to attend a school outside of their district that opportunity as well.(and not just for language immersion programs which in itself is a ridiculous small option to wave around in a massive unified district ) SHAME ON YOU!!!! You all lost my vote after this BS and we don’t even have a kid in elementary school anymore. Thankfully, We were lucky enough to attend a good school outside of our crappy neighborhood school area and thank god before you all decided to screw the families of this city over. SHAME ON YOU ALL!!

This is how it is in every city or town.. so there shouldn’t be a difference. If I live in a certain neighborhood in SF, I want to be able to walk my kid to school, not drive them across town.

I’m an idiot but it seems like this is going to divide the city even more

So how exactly is this going to work? SFUSD got sued to eliminate this system before. Neighborhood schools with good programs are already oversubscribed by local families. PTAs are already paying for things like asst principals and steam programs. I’d like to see the details of how it might actually work before being announced.

Properly fund all the schools. Fix red lining and food deserts in SF. Actually support and help the Bayview. Stop cutting transit lines. Tap in to where the money is going…

Berkeley has integrated elementary schools through a structured choice system. We just integrated our middle schools that had gotten segregated in order to even out PTA fundraising and other critical outcomes. SF is moving on the wrong direction and throwing low income children under the bus.

San Francisco took the voters money that was supposed to go to repair schools and built a new school in the wealthiest neighborhood and now they’re making sure that all the white and Asian children go to the posh school by the black children go to the ones in the gutter

This is common sense. Fix the disparity not make it inconvenient for parents and children.
